Thinking Out Loud: Learning Through Experiences

“There is only one way to learn. It’s through action. Everything you need to know you have learned through your journey.” ~  Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist

NOTE: I spent many years in formal education. I began in kindergarten and worked my way through high school to college. I eventually went to graduate school and earned my doctoral degree. I learned lots of things. What I learned on my life’s journey is worthy of three or four doctoral degrees. My teachers were experiences, friends, enemies, strangers, and loved ones. Pain, suffering, joy, and happiness were also my teachers. If we’re awake on our journey there are precious nuggets of knowledge to learn. Some of the wisest people I’ve met did not have the formal education I had, but they accumulated wisdom that formal education could never teach.

The Loom of Time: A Poem by an Unknown Author

The Loom of Time

Author Unknown

Man’s life is laid in the loom of time
To a pattern he does not see,
While the weavers work and the shuttles fly
Till the dawn of eternity.

Some shuttles are filled with silver threads
And some with threads of gold,
While often but the darker hues
Are all that they may hold.

But the weaver watches with skillful eye
Each shuttle fly to and fro,
And sees the pattern so deftly wrought
As the loom moves sure and slow.

God surely planned the pattern:
Each thread, the dark and fair,
Is chosen by His master skill
And placed in the web with care.

He only knows its beauty,
And guides the shuttles which hold
The threads so unattractive,
As well as the threads of gold.

Not till each loom is silent,
And the shuttles cease to fly,
Shall God reveal the pattern
And explain the reason why

The dark threads were as needful
In the weaver’s skillful hand
As the threads of gold and silver
For the pattern which He planned.

Cutting Out Bread and Sweets for One Month Can Lead to Weight Loss

The amount of weight an average person can lose by giving up bread and sweets for a month varies significantly depending on several factors. These factors include their initial weight, overall diet, daily caloric intake, metabolic rate, physical activity level, and individual health conditions.

  1. Caloric Deficit: Weight loss primarily occurs when there is a caloric deficit, meaning the person consumes fewer calories than they burn. Eliminating bread and sweets can reduce overall calorie intake, especially if these foods are a significant part of one’s diet.
  2. Initial Dietary Habits: If a person’s diet is high in calories from bread and sweets, cutting them out could lead to a more substantial caloric deficit and hence more weight loss.
  3. Metabolism and Physical Activity: People with higher metabolic rates or those who engage in regular physical activity may lose weight more quickly.
  4. Water Weight: Initial weight loss may be partly due to the loss of water weight, especially if the reduction in carbs leads to decreased glycogen stores, which are associated with water retention.
  5. Individual Differences: Each person’s body responds differently to dietary changes. Factors like age, gender, muscle mass, and overall health play a role.

As a rough estimate, creating a daily deficit of 500 calories can lead to approximately 1 pound of weight loss per week, as 3,500 calories roughly equate to one pound of fat. However, this is a general guideline and individual results can vary. For a specific and safe weight loss plan, it’s best to consult with a healthcare provider or a registered dietitian who can provide personalized advice based on individual health needs and goals.
