Today’s Poem: A Friend by Edgar Albert Guest

A Friend

Edgar Albert Guest

A friend is one who stands to share
Your every touch of grief and care.
He comes by chance, but stays by choice;
Your praises he is quick to voice.

No grievous fault or passing whim
Can make an enemy of him.
And though your need be great or small,
His strength is yours throughout it all.

No matter where your path may turn
Your welfare is his chief concern.
No matter what your dream may be
He prays your triumph soon to see.

There is no wish your tongue can tell
But what it is your friend’s as well.
The life of him who has a friend
Is double-guarded to the end.

Beyond the Visible: Understanding Grieving’s Unspoken Realities in Our Latest Episode

Welcome to Episode 86 of Dr. Ray Calabrese’s Journey from Grief to Healing Podcast. In this installment, Dr. Ray explores the concept of “undiscussables” in the grieving process, and emphasizes the importance of opening up about these difficult topics to aid healing.

In “Journey from Grief to Healing: Episode 86,” we explore the partial perspective we often have during grief. Like diners in a restaurant observing different slices of life, those grieving see only a fraction of their emotional landscape. Grief introduces ‘undiscussables,’ topics too painful or taboo to speak of, hindering a deeper understanding of our experience. Chris Argyris’ theories on action—espoused and in use—highlight the gap between what we say and do, especially in offering support. Discussing the undiscussable is crucial for healing, emphasizing the power of being heard without being fixed. Fred Rogers and Henri Nouwen remind us that sharing our pain without seeking solutions can forge a path through grief, as vulnerability turns undiscussables into discussables and fosters true companionship in sorrow.

Today’s Thought: What Voice Are You Listening To?

Most people never run far enough on their first wind to find out they’ve got a second. ~ William James

NOTE: I can’t make another person push harder even if I know that person isn’t close to tapping his or her potential. I can only push myself. When we see each challenge as a test, we can see how we measure up to the test life is presenting to us. Each test prepares us for the next test. We all know people who quit when they were so close to reaching their goal. There’s a little voice in all of us that says, “You don’t need to do this. It’s not worth it.” There’s also a little voice in all of us that says, “You got this. Keep pushing. You can do it.” What voice are you listening to? The voice you choose makes all the difference in your life.

Today’s Poem: Love Song by Rainer Maria Rilke

Love Song

Rainer Maria Rilke

How can I keep my soul in me, so that
it doesn’t touch your soul? How can I raise
it high enough, past you, to other things?
I would like to shelter it, among remote
lost objects, in some dark and silent place
that doesn’t resonate when your depths resound.
Yet everything that touches us, me and you,
takes us together like a violin’s bow,
which draws one voice out of two separate strings.
Upon what instrument are we two spanned?
And what musician holds us in his hand?
Oh sweetest song.

Get Healthy: Are Saturated Fats Essential for Good Health?

Yes, saturated fats play a role in maintaining health, but like many aspects of nutrition, balance and moderation are key. Saturated fats are found in animal products like meat, dairy, and eggs, as well as some plant-based sources like coconut oil and palm oil. They serve several important functions in the body:

  1. Cell Membrane Integrity: Saturated fats contribute to the structure of cell membranes, helping to provide cells with necessary rigidity and integrity.
  2. Brain Health: The brain is largely made up of fat and cholesterol, much of which is saturated. Saturated fats are crucial for brain health and function.
  3. Nutrient Absorption: They help in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) from the diet.
  4. Immune Function: Saturated fats can influence the immune system. For instance, certain saturated fatty acids help combat harmful microorganisms and play a role in immune health.

However, excessive intake of saturated fats has been linked to increased levels of LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol in some people, which is a risk factor for heart disease. As a result, dietary guidelines typically recommend limiting saturated fat intake to less than 10% of total daily calories and replacing them with unsaturated fats found in foods like nuts, seeds, fish, and vegetable oils, which can have a more favorable effect on blood cholesterol levels and heart health.

The key to a healthy diet is variety, balance, and moderation. Including small amounts of saturated fats as part of a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats can contribute to overall health. It’s always a good idea to consult with a healthcare provider or a dietitian for personalized dietary advice.

Today’s Thought: Our Toughest Critic

Never discourage anyone who continually makes progress, no matter how slow… even if that someone is yourself! ~ Plato

NOTE: Often, the toughest critic we face is the critic we meet in the mirror. The critic will spot a blemish, gray hair, or a new wrinkle. And, that’s when our fierce critic is taking easy on us. The critic is warming up for the biggies ready to remind us of our fault when we forget something, say something we didn’t intend to say, or make a purchase that didn’t go well. The critic is on alert throughout the day. No wonder we’re exhausted at the end of the day. I think it’s time to cut ourselves some slack and tell our critic his/her services are no longer needed. Life is better without the critic hanging around,
