Who Are You?

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” ~ Aristotle

We are responsible for our lives. We become what we repeatedly do, what we read, what we watch, and who we associate with. We have choices to make. Sometimes they are difficult choices. Who do I want to be? How do I want others who are important to me to see me? Figure out the answers to those two questions and direct your life to fulfilling those answers.

Leisure ~ A Poem by William H. Davies

Leisure

William H. Davies

What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this is if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

What Are You Destined to Do?

I went waking through a nature center. I paused for a moment and looked at the clear blue south Texas sky. I spotted red-tailed hawk gracefully gliding through the endless sky. Each of the hawk’s movements were a testament to the hawk doing what it was designed to do. I think that’s the way it is with each of us when we discover what are destined to do. We do it effortlessly and with a deep sense of joy. It no longer is work. It becomes passion set to music.

On Aging ~ A Poem by Maya Angelou

On Aging

Maya Angelou

When you see me sitting quietly,
Like a sack left on the shelf,
Don’t think I need your chattering.
I’m listening to myself.
Hold! Stop! Don’t pity me!
Hold! Stop your sympathy!
Understanding if you got it,
Otherwise I’ll do without it!
When my bones are stiff and aching,
And my feet won’t climb the stair,
I will only ask one favor:
Don’t bring me no rocking chair.
When you see me walking, stumbling,
Don’t study and get it wrong.
‘Cause tired don’t mean lazy
And every goodbye ain’t gone.
I’m the same person I was back then,
A little less hair, a little less chin,
A lot less lungs and much less wind.
But ain’t I lucky I can still breathe in.
