The rain beat a relentless rhythm against the rusted corrugated metal of the abandoned warehouse. Bob Warren kept his .38 steady, the barrel leveled right between Stefan Zolle’s eyes. Zolle, the mastermind who had pulled off the twenty-million-dollar Brinks heist, just sneered, a bloody smirk splitting his lip.
“It’s over, Zolle,” Bob growled, his knuckles white.
“Is it, Bobby?”
The heavy steel door groaned, swinging open with a sharp screech. Bob didn’t flinch, but his eyes darted sideways. Liz Marks stepped out of the downpour and into the dim, amber light. Her trench coat was soaked, her hair plastered to her forehead, but her hand was rock-steady. She held her own .38, and it wasn’t pointed at Zolle. It was pointed directly at Bob’s chest.
“Drop it, Bob,” Liz said, her voice like ice. “He’s mine.”
Bob’s heart hammered against his ribs. The old flame between them, currently snuffed out by a brutal turf war over this bounty, flickered dangerously in her eyes. “Liz, don’t do this. I tracked him first. The agency needs this win.”
“The agency needs me,” Liz countered, stepping closer, the triangular tension in the room tightening to a snapping point. “The city thinks we’re a team, Bob. Let’s prove them wrong.”
Zolle’s chuckle cut through the damp air. “A lover’s quarrel. How delightful. So, who shoots first?”
