Writer’s Prompt: The Escort’s Diary: A Daughter’s Choice Between Justice and Revenge

Spread the love

A mother buried. A hidden life uncovered. A chilling final instruction that changes everything.

The Last Call and the Brass Blade

Amy sat on the edge of the mattress, the salt on her face drying stiff in the afternoon heat. In her lap lay a cheap, spiral-bound notebook—and the confession that tore her mother’s memory to pieces. Only four people had stood at graveside. Four. While the minister hurried through rote prayers, Amy had been consumed by the unjust silence.

Then she found the diary.

“If I die unexpectedly, demand an autopsy. I’m sure Matt Prenker is poisoning me.”

Amy turned the pages backward. The sweet, Sunday-school volunteer, the woman who packed peanut butter sandwiches and hummed old hymns, had lived another life. Under Matt Prenker, she was an escort. The diary meticulously charted payments, bruises covered with heavy concealer, and the slow, metallic sickness that had stolen her breath week by agonizing week.

Prenker had sent flowers to the funeral.

A heavy, antique brass letter opener, tapered and sharp, rested on the nightstand near where her mother used to keep her Bible. Amy picked it up. It felt cold, significant.

Downstairs, the front door clicked open. A man’s heavy tread moved across the hardwood floors, heading toward the stairs. “Amy?” a deep, smooth voice called out. It was a voice she recognized from a recent voicemail her mother had frantically deleted. Matt Prenker was in the house.

She stood up, gripping the brass opener, her eyes fixed on the bedroom doorway.

Two Opposing Directions for the Writer:

  1. The Call to Authority: Amy slips the brass blade inside the diary to mark the page, hides the notebook in the closet, and, as Prenker arrives at the bedroom threshold, pulls her smartphone from her purse and dials 911, her finger hovering over the call button as she confronts him.
  2. The Final Appointment: Amy conceals the heavy brass blade within the folds of her black skirt, steels herself, and opens the bedroom door, saying with a cold calm, “I’m in here, Matt. I’ve been waiting for you.”
