Writer’s Prompt

The gavel fell like an executioner’s axe, severing twenty-eight years of spotless pedigree in a single strike.

Summa cum laude. Youngest associate on the fast track to junior partner. Erin Carpenter did not lose. Losers were an alien species, careless creatures who allowed emotion or oversight to poison their ambition. Yet there she had stood in Federal District Court, frozen before the bench as Department of Justice counsel Paul Vance snapped his trap shut.

She had buried the internal hydro-geological audit under three thousand pages of benign corporate boilerplate, convinced Vance would miss the buried anomalies. He hadn’t. In fact, he’d baited her into submitting the bundle under formal certification. Vance eviscerated her line by line, exposing the deliberate falsification that poisoned an entire county’s aquifer so Apex Energy could harvest billions. He tore the firm’s prestige to shreds and branded Erin a willing accomplice to corporate poisoning.

By noon, building security stood over her desk with a cardboard box. By dusk, she sat alone on her hardwood floor, surrounded by thirty stories of panoramic city lights mocking her disgrace.

A cheap bottle of Pinot Noir sat drained beside an untouched glass of water. On the glass table lay the heavy brass paperweight she’d received upon making Law Review. The shame wasn’t a dull ache; it was a black hole devouring her breath, whispering that there was only one permanent way to silence Vance’s ringing condemnation.

Then her phone illuminated the dark.

The screen flashed an unlisted Washington, D.C. exchange. Her thumb hovered over the glowing green icon, pulse pounding against her throat.
