Writer’s Prompt: Undercover Flash Fiction: The Precinct Handshake That Sparked a Standoff

He crushed her fingers to prove he owned the precinct—unaware she was wearing a wire for the District Attorney.

Liz accepted his grip and gave him nothing. No wince, no sudden intake of breath, no flinch. She let him bear down until the metacarpals ground like coarse salt under his callous skin, meeting his predatory grin with eyes as flat and gray as a precinct floor.

Beneath her left lapel, the microminiature wire hummed against her collarbone, transmitting Wayne Levitts’s quiet, rhythmic intimidation straight to a surveillance van two blocks north.

“Detective Levitts,” she said, her voice steady enough to balance a nickel on edge. “Heard you run a tight squad.”

“Tighter than you’re used to, Watkins,” he murmured, his thumb grinding precisely into the sensitive junction of her tendon. A classic alleyway trick—leaves no bruise, breaks no bone, establishes absolute dominance. “Downtown transfers usually lack the stomach for our kind of closure.”

“Try me.”

Levitts held the squeeze for two beats past professional courtesy, daring her to yank away. If she pulled back, he owned her. If she swung, he’d have her badge before shift change. Instead, Liz smiled—small, razor-thin, and cold. She subtly shifted her stance, driving her heel into the linoleum, rotating her wrist a fraction of an inch to transfer the leverage from her knuckle joints to the meat of her thumb.

Levitts’s brow twitched. A hairline crack in his smirk.

He didn’t release her hand; he tightened down further, sensing the shift, realizing too late that her palm wasn’t trembling from fear—it was bracing for counter-torque. Across the bullpen, three veteran patrolmen paused over their clipboards, eyes locking onto the lingering grip. Levitts leaned in, close enough for Liz to smell stale diner coffee and cordite, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper against her ear:

“You’re playing a dangerous game, counselor.”

Choose the Path: Where Does the Story Go?

The wire is hot, the squad room is watching, and Levitts just signaled that he might already know who she is. How does Liz play the next ten seconds?

Which path finishes the story? Pick a direction and write the scene that follows.
