Writer’s Prompt

Carla slipped the leather into her wool coat, exhaling a quiet breath as the train rocked along the tracks. Two wallets now pressed against her ribs: the victim’s floral-embossed clutch and the worn snakeskin belonging to the girl in the olive beanie. It had been effortless—a stumble, an apology, a phantom tap.

The pickpocket hadn’t noticed. She stood near the center pole, adjusting her earbuds, eyes scanning the crowd for the next mark. Carla drifted backward toward the sliding doors, her pulse humming with righteous adrenaline.

Then the brakes screamed.

Metal groaned against metal, throwing passengers into a frantic knot of elbows and coats. The train jolted violently, shuddering to a halt half-submerged in the damp black of the express tunnel. Overhead, the fluorescent bulbs flickered twice and died.

Anxious murmurs rippled through the dark, instantly illuminated by the ghostly glow of a dozen smartphone screens.

Carla thumbed her own phone light on, angling the beam toward the floor. In the pocket against her chest, a harsh, rhythmic vibration began. It wasn’t her phone.

She reached inside the snakeskin wallet. Hidden inside a zippered seam was a silver burner device, buzzing with an incoming call. The glowing screen read: UNDERBOSS.

Before she could silence it, a chill ran down Carla’s spine. She raised her eyes.

A foot away, illuminated by the cold blue light of a screen, stood the girl in the beanie. Her hands were buried deep in empty pockets, her gaze locked dead onto Carla’s chest. The girl stepped forward, reaching behind her back.
