Two rising socialites set their sights on the city’s most elusive fortune—only to find that winning it comes with a terrifying clause.

The penthouse air was always too thin, too recycled. Gina Torres adjusted her emerald cuff, letting the heavy gold catch the chandelier light. Across the mahogany table, Gail Sampson gave a thin, feline smile over the rim of her Baccarat flute. They had claws hidden in tailored silk, two sharks circling the same shimmering current: Jeff Wakins III.
Wakins sat at the head, radiating the effortless pedigree that only third-generation empires could breed. He didn’t wear success; it clung to him like ozone after lightning. For six months, Gina had analyzed his portfolio patterns while Gail mapped his family’s offshore trusts. Neither planned on settling for a consolation prize. They both had their eyes on the prize, the same prize. Wakins oozed money, glamour, and power. Gina and Gail wanted it all and had no intention of sharing it.
The waiter cleared the last porcelain plate and vanished, pulling the double doors shut with an echo like a tomb sealing shut.
Jeff reached into his breast pocket and drew out a single, heavy brass key, setting it down between their crystal glasses. It landed with a heavy, final thud on the velvet runner.
“Greystone Manor,” Jeff said smoothly. “My grandfather built it on ambition and silence. One key enters the estate tonight. One woman pulls the stock certificates tomorrow.” He stood, his magnetic smile replaced by a hollow look. “I have no intention of sharing. Only one of you will be there at sunrise to inherit it all.”
He turned and walked away into the shadows of the massive suite. Gina’s fingers twitched toward the velvet coaster. Gail’s knuckles turned bone-white against her glass.
The key stared back. They both knew they wouldn’t share it.
