A warm thermos, a sweet kiss, and a scent that could change everything.

The Bitter Brew
For Jason Winslow, it had been as if he was riding on a shooting star the moment Mia Prescott walked into his office. He had put his brain on the shelf and let his heart do all the thinking. When all she wanted was for him to get back some embarrassing photos of her held by her ex-boyfriend, Matt Diggs, Jason didn’t hesitate. He asked politely first, then used some physical persuasion. A bruised and battered Diggs quickly complied.
But that was six months ago. Lately, the ride had gotten bumpy. Jason didn’t need braille to read the signs—they were all there. The headaches, the sudden late nights, the out-of-town conferences. He knew Mia was tired of him.
Then, she changed course. Suddenly, she became sweeter than honey. Jason, however, kept his guard up: fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.
Yet, Mia played the part of the doting partner perfectly. She made him a thermos of coffee for work, kissed him gently, and told him to hurry home because she’d be waiting.
Now, Jason sat in his car, the heater struggling against the morning chill. He unscrewed the thermos cap, and the steam carried the rich, deep notes of cocoa and a smoky roast. But hidden beneath them was another scent—sharp, slightly sweet, yet metallic. Like bitter almonds.
He stared at the dark liquid. Was Mia trying to make amends, or was this her final, lethal move to free herself from the man who knew too much? His hand hovered over the cup. One sip could prove him a fool—or a corpse.
