Writer’s Prompt: The Ledger of Sins: A Dying Assistant’s Final Retribution

When your doctor gives you six months to live, whose debts do you settle first?

Writer’s Prompt

For twenty years, the shredder in the sub-basement hummed like a faithful choir. Ted fed it paper, and in return, Paul Stange made him wealthy, invisible, and complicit. Ted watched Stange ruin partners, forge wills, and dismantle lives with the flick of a fountain pen. Ted never judged; he just scanned every duplicate onto an encrypted drive tucked beneath his floorboards. A silent insurance policy he never intended to cash.

Then came the white room, the quiet doctor, and the sentence: six months.

Standing on the mezzanine above Stange’s corner office, Ted felt the weight of twenty years settle into his ribs. Down below, Stange sat alone, nursing an eighteen-year-old scotch, waiting for the evening car service. Ted’s coat pocket held two things: the drive containing enough federal crimes to entomb Stange in prison forever, and an untraceable vial of clear liquid, easily emptied into a decanter.

Ted stepped onto the plush carpet. Stange didn’t look up from his desk. “Ted, get the sedan around. And prep the Henderson files for disposal tomorrow.”

Ted stopped beside the mahogany credenza. The decanter was half-empty. Stange’s glass was dry.

“I won’t be here tomorrow, Paul,” Ted said.

Stange finally glanced up, ice clinking in his glass, his cold gaze narrowing. “Is that an ultimatum, Ted?”

Ted’s fingers brushed the plastic casing of the flash drive. Next to it, the glass vial was cool against his palm. Six months wasn’t enough to earn forgiveness, but it was enough to settle the balance. He stepped forward and reached into his coat.

Two Paths Forward: How Does Ted’s Story End?

  • Path A (The Scorched-Earth Justice): Ted slides the thumb drive across the mahogany desk, smiles at Stange’s disbelief, and walks out the front doors straight to the federal prosecutor’s office. He chooses the messy, public purge of truth over quiet murder, ready to spend his final months watching the empire fall from a courtroom bench.
  • Path B (The Permanent Solution): Ted bypasses the law entirely. Knowing Stange’s money and judges could keep him free for years, Ted pours the vial into the decanter, turns the key in the office lock, and sits across from his boss to ensure every drop is consumed.

How would you finish Ted’s final act? Does he seek legal redemption, or does he take Stange to the grave with him? Pick a side and write the ending!
