He swore he could take her ex with one hand tied behind his back—until the headlights flared in the dark.

The Price of Defiance

Ralph Collins tightened his grip around Ginger Saco’s waist, pulling her closer against the cool night air of the terrace. Music drifted from inside the lounge, but out here, high above the city, the night belonged to them.

“To freedom,” Ginger whispered, clinking her glass against his. Her smile was genuine, but the faint tremor in her hand betrayed her.

Ginger’s divorce from Biff Langston had finalized that morning. Biff, the billionaire owner of the region’s largest supermarket empire, wasn’t used to losing. He had stood in front of the judge, locked eyes with Ginger, and promised to kill her if she ever let another man touch her.

Ralph had laughed when she told him. I could take that inflated suit blindfolded and with one hand tied behind my back, he had claimed.

Now, the heavy wooden double doors of the terrace swung open.

Biff Langston stepped into the moonlight. He wasn’t wearing a suit. He wore heavy tactical leather, and his hand rested firmly inside his jacket pocket. Two towering men flanked him, blocking the only exit to the stairs.

“I warned you, Ginger,” Biff said, his voice flat, devoid of emotion.

Ginger froze, her glass slipping from her fingers and shattering on the stone floor. Ralph shifted, stepping in front of her. His heart hammered against his ribs, the bravado from earlier dissolving into sheer adrenaline. He reached into his coat, but before his fingers could touch his grip, Biff’s men surged forward with terrifying speed.

Metal flashed in the dim light. A sharp crack echoed off the brick walls. Ralph gasped, stumbling back into the iron railing as pain tore through his shoulder. Ginger screamed. Biff took three slow, deliberate steps toward them, drawing a heavy blue-steel barrel from his coat.

The story isn’t over yet—how does Ralph survive, or does Biff take his final revenge? Write the next paragraph and finish the scene!
