Oft For Our Own ~ A Poem by Margaret Elizabeth Sangster

Oft For Our Own

Margaret Elizabeth Sangster

If I had known in the morning
How wearily all the day
the words unkind
would trouble my mind, that
I said when you went away;
I would have been more careful, darling;
nor given you needless pain;
But we vex our own
with a look and tone
We may never take back again.
For though in the quiet evening
You may give me the kiss of peace;
Yet, it might be, that never for me
The pain of the heart may cease.

How many go forth in the morning
and never come home at night,
and hearts have broken
for harsh words spoken
That sorrow can never set right.

We have careful thoughts for the stranger
and smiles for the sometime guest;
But oft for our own,
the bitter tone,
though we love our own the best.

Oh, lips, with curve impatient
and brow with a look of scorn
‘ Twere a cruel fate
were the night too late
to undo the work of the morn.

Thinking Out Loud – Let Go of Anger & Resentment

Today’s Thinking Out Loud reflection is on Aesop’s Fable, The Farmer and the Fox. Aesop’s Fables is available for free download here.

The Fable

“A Farmer was greatly annoyed by a Fox, which came prowling about

his yard at night and carried off his fowls. So he set a trap for

him and caught him; and in order to be revenged upon him, he tied a

bunch of tow to his tail and set fire to it and let him go. As

ill-luck would have it, however, the Fox made straight for the

fields where the corn was standing ripe and ready for cutting. It

quickly caught fire and was all burnt up, and the Farmer lost all

his harvest.”

Note: Getting even is a strategy that hurts the person seeking revenge as much as it hurts the person on the receiving end of the revenge seeker’s anger. Holding on to past hurts creates a field where resentments fester and often spill over into harmful actions. The field produces an array of harmful emotions and physical problems. Letting go of past hurts and resentments leads to a more peaceful and happy life.

Feeling Good Tip of the Day ~ Let Go of Grudges

It’s one thing to get upset over an injustice you suffered at the hands of someone else, but it’s another thing entirely to hold on to that emotion long-term. That’s called holding a grudge and it can easily consume you if you’re not careful.

The reason this is so bad for your happiness is because the negative emotions associated with grudges eventually give way to resentment and thoughts of revenge. In turn, this leaves little room in your emotional repertoire for anything else, like happiness, according to the Mayo Clinic. What’s more, decades of research have linked this simple act to better overall heart health, less psychological stress, improved physical ability, and longer life.
