A single phone call during wedding planning turns a dream future into a deadly countdown.

The Price of Silence
Jaime’s hand locked around the phone, the metal casing burning against his palm. Across the cluttered dining table, Maria was color-coding wedding invitations, her laughter drifting over a spread of floral swatches.
“Is that your cousin from Guadalajara?” she asked without looking up, a bright red pen hovering over the guest list. “Tell him if he brings a plus-one, they’re sitting near the kitchen.”
Jaime couldn’t breathe. The voice in his ear was flat, stripped of accent or emotion, distortion buzzing through the foreign line. “Your abuela dies if you don’t do what I tell you to do.”
In his mind, he saw Abuela’s sunlit kitchen in Michoacán—the smell of crushed cilantro, the calloused hands that had worked three jobs to pay his college tuition after his parents passed. She was eighty-two. Frail. Defenseless.
“Who is this?” Jaime whispered, turning his back to Maria, his voice barely audible over the hum of the air conditioner.
“Listen carefully,” the voice continued. “There is a grey courier bag inside the locker at the Greyhound station on St. Mary’s Street. Combination 40-12-88. You take it to the border bridge in Laredo before midnight. Tell no one. Especially not the girl.”
The line clicked dead.
Jaime stood frozen. The Texas heat pressed against the windowpanes like a furnace. Across the room, Maria looked up, her smile fading as she read the sudden, stark terror in his eyes.
“Jaime? What’s wrong? Who was that?”
His mind fractured into a thousand choices. If he left now, he might save the woman who gave him a future. But walking into that station meant dragging dark, dangerous shadows directly into the life he was building with Maria.
He reached for his car keys. Maria stood up, stepping into his path.
What Happens Next?
Does Jaime tell Maria the truth and risk Abuela’s life, or does he slip into the San Antonio night alone, leaving his future behind? How would you finish the story?
