Stuff happens all the time. I know someone who refuses to watch the news or read about current events. He says he’s happier that way. Sometimes you have to roll up your sleeves, get your hands dirty and work with others to benefit the community.

The Lights Came On

The lights went out in south Texas during the winter storm and frigid temperatures. Periodically, they came on and left, leaving my neighbors and me to go to bed at dusk and wait for sun to rise before we got up. Then it happened, in the middle of the night, the lights came on and stayed on. I find this a great lesson for life. Troubles hit and knock us down. We wonder if we’ll ever get through. A brief spurt of hope appears and disappears. Then, when least expected, the lights come on. Our troubles are behind us. Don’t quit. Don’t give up.

Surviving the Texas Winter Storm

Today the winter event continues in south Texas. It’s been 48 hours since I’ve had water. Electricity returned around midnight (that’s a plus). Here’s what makes this situation tolerable. A friend has electricity and water. My friend gave me an invitation to weather the storm in my friend’s house. Another friend gave me two potatoes (two potatoes are a big deal when the grocery shelves are empty). Another friend turned the water off to my home until the temperatures are back over freezing. I hope I am as good a friend to them as they are to me. We make it through difficult time best, when we make it through together.

đź’ˇ Something to Think About

It’s been a tough week in Texas. The winter storm shows no sign of letting up. For the third night, there was no power. This morning there was no water. I checked with neighbors and all are without water. A lesson learned for me, I will be grateful each time I use water to wash my hands. I will be grateful each time I use water to brush my teeth. I will be grateful for each cup of coffee I make. The little things, so easily ignored because they are always there. When they are not there, they become the big things.

What we do speaks more powerfully than what we say.

Six inches of snow fell on my home in south Texas last night. This morning’s temperature is 7. I think I’ll make a snowman and toss snowballs. Why complain when the freak snowstorm poured out a rare beautiful scene. I’ll enjoy it all.

Who would have predicted a winter storm for south Texas in mid-February? Signs of spring should be popping up everywhere. No sense complaining, it won’t do any good. I think I’ll get the slow cooker out and start lentil soup. I might even step outside and say thank you for the cold air, snow, and the gifts of the moment.

When we focus on one dot on a large wall we believe our problems are overwhelming. If we adjust our focus, we gain a new perspective and understand our troubles may not be as big as we made them out to be.

Martin Buber, theologian and philosopher, said we become whole by virtue of an authentic relationship with another. Moving out of one’s self-made boundaries toward another can be frightening, in doing so we discover our true self.

We have heavy winds and storms today. My Internet connection is out. I’m lost. I’ll use this time to read a book, meditate, or go to the gym. I might find not being online is a good thing.
