Today’s Reflection: Fear of Failure
There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure. ~ Paulo Coehlo
The Disappointed ~ Ella Wheeler Wilcox
There are songs enough for the hero
Who dwells on the heights of fame;
I sing of the disappointed—
For those who have missed their aim.
I sing with a tearful cadence
For one who stands in the dark,
And knows that his last, best arrow
Has bounded back from the mark.
I sing for the breathless runner,
The eager, anxious soul,
“Who falls with his strength exhausted.
Almost in sight of the goal;
For the hearts that break in silence,
With a sorrow all unknown,
For those who need companions,
Yet walk their ways alone.
There are songs enough for the lovers
Who share love’s tender pain,
I sing for the one whose passion
Is given all in vain.
For those whose spirit comrades
Have missed them on their way,
I sing, with a heart o’erflowing,
This minor strain to-day.
And I know the Solar system
Must somewhere keep in space
A prize for that spent runner
Who barely lost the race.
For the plan would be imperfect
Unless it held some sphere
That paid for the toil and talent
And love that are wasted here.
Ella Wheeler Wilcox
Today’s Quotation by Melville on Success
It is better to fail in originality, than to succeed in imitation. He who has never failed somewhere, that man can not be great. Failure is the true test of greatness.
Herman Melville
Something to Think About
I learned much more from defeat than I ever learned from winning.
Grantland Rice
It hurts to fail. I’ve failed and I’ve never liked it. A mentor gave me some wonderful advice, which I share with you. He said, “Ray, give yourself 24 hours to be upset. When the 24 hours are over, ask yourself what lessons failure taught you. They are there if you’ll look. Be grateful for them, learn from them. Then, shake it off and move on.
When has failure taught you an important lesson?
What was the lesson you learned?
How did your failure make you a better person?
Today’s Quote on Never Quiting
It’s better to have tried and failed than to live life wondering what would’ve happened if I had tried
Alfred Lord Tennyson
Too Tough, Too Stubborn To Quit
Setbacks happen. Failure happens. Each time they happen let’s say thank you for what we learned and for the courage we had not to give up. That’s right, say thank you for the lesson learned. We won’t repeat the same mistake, we’re stronger, tougher, smarter, and we won’t quit. We’re too tough, too ornery, too stubborn to quit. Get inspired to fight on with this brief YouTube video.
Fan The Flames of Fire In Your Heart
What is the size of the fire in your heart? There is always a burning ember. It’s waiting for you to fan its flames. It’s waiting for you to call on it. It will respond. It will not let you down. It’s the roaring flame in your heart that will pull you through. Failure becomes a teacher. Setbacks become a setup for something better. Getting knocked down becomes an opportunity to rise again, shake it off and press onward.

The runner in this YouTube video fanned the flames of fire in his heart and he wouldn’t quit. Take a lesson from his example.
Don’t Quit – Give It All You’ve Got
I’ve always liked sports. I enjoyed the competition, comradery, and the discipline participation taught me. The athletes who participate in sporting events often offer great metaphors for us. In the following YouTube video, the athlete could have easily quit, no one would have noticed except her teammates. She could have given less than full effort. Instead, her 110% effort becomes our metaphor to never quit, no matter how dire the circumstances. The only time failure is certain is when we quit. Don’t quit. Don’t give up. Give it all you’ve got.
