Toughness is the stuff we see on TV when folks snarl at each other and make threats. That’s mot toughness. Toughness measures the amount of grit one has to keep grinding and not give up. Grit takes the small tasks and worksthem to their conclusion. Grit is the stuff one has to stay on task when the others walk away. Two people with grit will outperform and out work a dozen without grit.
Good word
Today’s Good Word ~ Friendship
Friendship is a lot different than having many digital friends. Friendship represents the strong bond between two people. In this strong bond, the imperfect nature of each is brought to fullness through the friendship. Each sees in the other what the other cannot see. Something beautiful is created by two who become friends and offer friendship to each other with no string attached.
Today’s Good Word ~ Advice
Good advice is a treasure. Never let it pass by when it comes knocking. I recall an experience I had as a department chair in an academic setting. I was having a contentious relationship with a senior colleague in the department. I was sharing my story with another, more experienced, department chair as we walked in the hallway. He put his arm around and said, “Ray, it took me a long time to learn this lesson. I give it to you freely. Never get into a pissing contest with a skunk. You’ll only lose.” I laughed, but instantly knew he was right. That piece of advice has helped me time and again throughout life.
Today’s Good Word ~ Difficult
I just finished talking to a friend who is biking through northern Spain with her family. My friend told me they encountered some steep climbs. They were tired, but they were proud of themselves for not quitting on the steep climbs. The climbs were difficult. They kept grinding, gained confidence and strength. They now know they are tougher than the climbs. Don’t fear the difficult. It’s preparing you for the impossible.
Today’s Good Word ~ beliefs
Our beliefs of what we see determines the road we travel. One person looks at a sunset and barely notices it. Another sees the same sunset and gives thanks for God for the gift of life. One person sees a homeless person begging on the sidewalk and wonders why the city allows such things. Another person sees the same homeless person begging and sees someone who’s run into back luck and reaches into his/her pocket for a bit of help. One person sees someone of a different color and worries about his/her safety. Another person sees the same person of a different color and offers a smile and ‘hi, how’s it going?’ Is it time to question our beliefs about what we see?
Today’s Good Word ~ What Did You Learn Today?
A thief may steal our wallet. We may lose a job. A friend may walk away. But, no one can take what we learn. If we keep learning, we acquire a wealth of knowledge that will remain with us throughout our life. Learn, learn, and keep on learning.
Today’s Good Word ~ See
Eyesight is a wonderful gift. It allows us to read, see a lover, watch a ball game, see natural phenomena. When we close our eyes, we enter a world of darkness. Take advantage this day of your eyesight and see the wonderful things and people who come into your view. If you do it consciously you’ll be filled with wonder and awe for this wonderful world of which we are a part.
Today’s Good Word ~ Honor
We either have honor or we don’t. There is no middle ground. Honor is a measure of our character. It marks us as trustworthy, one who can be counted on when the going gets tough. Honor is our commitment to others beyond ourself. Honor is hard earned and easily lost. Hold tight to your honor. It will become a lasting tribute.
Today’s Good Word ~ Know
Here’s a question for you: Do you know who you are? Of course, right? You know your name. You know the people close to you. You know your address. But, do you know who you are? Do you know the song your heart plays? Do you know what you are searching for? Do you know your dark side? Do you know your light side? Getting to know ourselves is a life long process and it’s much like peeling an onion. It’s one layer at time and it’s never finished.
Today’s Good Word ~ Wait
I do not like to wait. I’ve learned that somethings can’t be rushed. Yet, it is still difficult for me. Waiting is filled with anticipation. Yet, I think waiting is built into our nature. We wait for the seasons to change. As a child we wait for the school year to start and to end. We wait for sports seasons. We wait to fall in love. We wait for an anticipated vacation. We wait to receive a call from someone we love. We wait and wait. Waiting is teaching us something. What is it for you?
