Poem forToday ~ Ode to the Sun

Ode to the Sun

Eloise Bibb Thompson

How many scenes, O sun,
Hast thou not shone upon!
How many tears, O light,
Have dropped before thy sight!
How many heart-felt sighs,
How many piercing cries,
How many deeds of woe,
Dost thy bright light not know!
How many broken hearts,
That are pierced by sorrow’s darts
How many maddened brains,
That are wild with passion’s rains;
How many soul-sick lives,
Stabbed with despair’s sharp knives,
Hast thou above the skies,
Not seen with thy radiant eyes!
Shine on, majestic one!
Shine on, O glorious sun!
And never fail to cheer
My life so dark and drear.
Whene’er thou shinest bright,
And show thy brilliant light,
The cares I know each day
Silently steal away.

Thinking Out Loud ~ Awareness of Our Thoughts is a First Step

Becoming Aware

James Allen in his book, “As a Man Thinketh, says, “Act is the blossom of thought, and joy and suffering are its fruits; thus does a man garner in the sweet and bitter fruitage of his own husbandry.” Pp. 10-11

As a Man Thinketh is available online at gutenberg.org under the Harvard Classics.

NOTE: When we come to the awareness that we are responsible for our actions and no one else is, we can begin to make decisions that increase our success and happiness. Attributing blame to others for what we do is an excuse where we try to remove responsibility from ourselves. Awareness of our thoughts is the beginning of wisdom.

Feel Good Tip ~ There is a Better Way

Staying Angry is Not a Pathway to Happiness

Folks who enjoy finding fault and criticizing other are seldom happy. Check out the angry talking heads on the political cable news channels. I think most forgot how to smile.  The happier folks are those who don’t let anger dominate their lives. They recognize their own imperfections, avoid condemning others, and seek to discover peaceful and constructive ways to interact with all who pass through their life. I\

Poem of the Day ~ A Song of Love

A Song of Love

Allice Dunbar-Nelson

Oh, drink thou deep of the purple wine,
And it’s hey for love, for I love you so!
Oh, clasp me close, with your lips on mine,
And it’s hey for love, for I love you so!
The sea lies violet, deep, and wide,
My heart beats high with the rushing tide;
Was it fancy, beloved, the seagulls cried:
“Sing loud for love, for I love him so”?

Oh, little boat for tossing wave,
Sing loud for love, for I love him so!
Oh, y’all pine tree in the shadows grave,
Sing loud for love, for I love him so!
The little waves kiss the gleaming sand,
I laugh in the sun on the joyful land;
Beloved, one clasp of your strong young hand;
The world is fair, for I love you so!

Poem for Today ~ To One Who Said Me Nay

To One Who Said Me Nay

Countee Cullen

This much the gods vouchsafe today:
That we two lie in the clover,
Watching the heavens dip and sway,
    With galleons sailing over.

This much is granted for an hour:
That we are young and tender,
That I am bee and you are flower,
    Honey-mouthed and swaying slender.

This sweet of sweets is ours now:
    To wander through the land,
Plucking an apple from its bough
To toss from hand to hand.

No thing is certain, joy nor sorrow,
    Except the hour we know it;
Oh, wear my heart today; tomorrow
Who knows where the winds will blow it?

Daily Inspirational Quotes ~ Love What You Are Doing

“Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success.

If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.”

Albert Schweitzer

Poem for Today ~ Joy

Joy

Clarissa Scott Delany

Joy shakes me like the wind that lifts a sail,
Like the roistering wind
That laughs through stalwart pines.
It floods me like the sun
On rain-drenched trees
That flash with silver and green.

I abandon myself to joy—
I laugh—I sing.
Too long have I walked a desolate way,
Too long stumbled down a maze
Bewildered.

Feel Good Tip ~ The 8 Things The Happiest People Do Every Day

The Happiest People Do the Following. How many do you do?

  1. They devote a great amount of time to their family and friends, nurturing and enjoying those relationships.
  2. They are comfortable expressing gratitude for all they have.
  3. They are often the first to offer helping hands to coworkers and passersby.
  4. They practice optimism when imagining their futures.
  5. They savor life’s pleasures and try to live in the present moment.
  6. They make physical exercise a weekly and even daily habit.
  7. They are deeply committed to lifelong goals and ambitions (e.g., fighting fraud, building cabinets, or teaching their children their deeply held values).
  8. Last but not least, the happiest people do have their share of stresses, crises, and even tragedies. They may become just as distressed and emotional in such circumstances as you or I, but their secret weapon is the poise and strength they show in coping in the face of challenge.

Note; A wise person told me, “Ray we always find time to do what we want to do.” If I want to be happier, I’ll find time to make the items on this list part of my life. Is it time for a personal assessment on how you choose to spend you time?
