Writers’ Wisdom: Difference Between Talented & Good Writing

Talented writing is, however, something else. You need talent to write fiction. Good writing is clear. Talented writing is energetic. Good writing avoids errors. Talented writing makes things happen in the reader’s mind—vividly, forcefully—that good writing, which stops with clarity and logic, doesn’t. ~ Samuel R. Delan

Nothing happens unless first we dream. ~ Carl Sandburg

Writers’ Wisdom: Imaginative Truth

Contrary to all those times you’ve heard a writer confess at a reading that he writes fiction because he is a pathological liar, fiction writing is all about telling the truth. Don’t confine truth to fact. Imaginative truth is as powerful and often enough more so than fact. ~ Paul Harding

Practicality of Love by Pedro Arrupe SJ

Love

Nothing is more practical than
finding God, than falling in Love
in a quite absolute, final way.

What you are in love with,
what seizes your imagination, will affect everything.

It will decide
what will get you out of bed in the morning,
what you do with your evenings,
how you spend your weekends,
what you read, whom you know,
what breaks your heart,
and what amazes you with joy and gratitude.
Fall in Love, stay in love,
and it will decide everything.

—Attributed to Pedro Arrupe, SJ

Tip 6 of William Faulkner’s 7 Fiction Writing Tips

Don’t exhaust your imagination.

The only rule I have is to quit while it’s still hot. Never write yourself out. Always quit when it’s going good. Then it’s easier to take it up again. If you exhaust yourself, then you’ll get into a dead spell and you’ll have trouble with it.

Anything you may hold firmly in your imagination can be yours.

Today’s Quote on Self-Improvement

Do not say to yourself, ‘I am going to act this way tomorrow.’ Just say to yourself – ‘I am going to imagine myself acting this way NOW – for 30 minutes – today.’

Maxwell Maltz

Something to Think About

“Imagination creates reality.”

Richard Wagner

Can you recall a time when you imagined something you wanted to happen, then worked toward making it become a reality? What was it? How did you feel when you turned your imagination into reality?
