Today’s Poem ~ Clearing at Dawn

Clearing at Dawn

Li Po

The fields are chill, the sparse rain has stopped;
The colours of Spring teem on every side.
With leaping fish the blue pond is full;
With singing thrushes the green boughs droop.
The flowers of the field have dabbled their powdered cheeks;
The mountain grasses are bent level at the waist.
By the bamboo stream the last fragment of cloud
Blown by the wind slowly scatters away.

Today’s Poem ~ Meeting at Night

Meeting at Night

Robert Browning

The gray sea and the long black land;

And the yellow half-moon large and low;

And the startled little waves that leap

In fiery ringlets from their sleep,

As I gain the cove with pushing prow,

And quench its speed i’ the slushy sand.

Then a mile of warm sea-scented beach;

Three fields to cross till a farm appears;

A tap at the pane, the quick sharp scratch

And blue spurt of a lighted match,

And a voice less loud, through its joys and fears,

Than the two hearts beating each to each!

Today’s Poem ~ My Star

My Star

Robert Browning

All that I know
Of a certain star
Is, it can throw
(Like the angled spar)
Now a dart of red,
Now a dart of blue;
Till my friends have said
They would fain see, too,
My star that dartless the red and the blue!
Then it stops like a bird; like a flower hangs furled:
They must solace themselves with the Saturn above it.
What matter to me if their star is a world?

Mine has opened its soul to me, therefore I love it

Today’s Poem ~ One Perfect Rose

One Perfect Rose

Dorothy Parker

A single flow’r he sent me, since we met.
     All tenderly his messenger he chose;
Deep-hearted, pure, with scented dew still wet—
     One perfect rose.

I knew the language of the floweret;
     “My fragile leaves,” it said, “his heart enclose.”
Love long has taken for his amulet
     One perfect rose.

Why is it no one ever sent me yet
     One perfect limousine, do you suppose?
Ah no, it’s always just my luck to get
     One perfect rose.

Today’s Poem ~ Promise

Promise

Georgia Douglas Johnson

Through the moil and the gloom they have issued
    To the steps of the upwinding hill,
Where the sweet, dulcet pipes of tomorrow
    In their preluding rhapsodies trill.

With a thud comes a stir in the bosom,
    As there steals on the sight from afar,
Through a break of a cloud’s coiling shadow
    The gleam of a bright morning star!

Today’s Poem ~ The Flower at My Window

The Flower at My Window

Lucian B. Watkins

O! my heart now feels so cheerful as I go with footsteps light
      In the daily toil of my dear home;
And I’ll tell to you the secret that now makes my life so bright—
      There’s a flower at my window in full bloom.

It is radiant in the sunshine, and so cheerful after rain;
        And it wafts upon the air its sweet perfume.
It is very, very lovely! May its beauties never wane—
        This dear flower at my window in full bloom.

Nature has so clothed it in such glorious array,
      And it does so cheer our home, and hearts illume;
Its dear mem’ry I will cherish though the flower fade away—
      This dear flower at my window in full bloom.

Oft I gaze upon this flower with its blossoms pure and white.
        And I think as I behold its gay costume,
While through life we all are passing may our lives be always bright
        Like this flower at my window in full bloom.

Today’s Poem ~ Dream Variations

Dream Variations

Langston Hughes

To fling my arms wide
In some place of the sun,
To whirl and to dance
Till the white day is done.
Then rest at cool evening
Beneath a tall tree
While night comes on gently,
    Dark like me—
That is my dream
!

To fling my arms wide
In the face of the sun,
Dance! Whirl! Whirl!
Till the quick day is done.
Rest at pale evening . . .
A tall, slim tree . . .
Night coming tenderly
    Black like me.

Today’s Poem ~ Give Me Your Hand

Give Me Your Hand

Gabriela Mistral

Give me your hand and give me your love,
give me your hand and dance with me.
A single flower, and nothing more,
a single flower is all we’ll be.

Keeping time in the dance together,
singing the tune together with me,
grass in the wind, and nothing more,
grass in the wind is all we’ll be.

I’m called Hope and you’re called Rose:
but losing our names we’ll both go free,
a dance on the hills, and nothing more,
a dance on the hills is all we’ll be.

🌾 Today’s Poem ~ Joy

Joy

Clarissa Scott Delany

Joy shakes me like the wind that lifts a sail,
Like the roistering wind
That laughs through stalwart pines.
It floods me like the sun
On rain-drenched trees
That flash with silver and green.

I abandon myself to joy—
I laugh—I sing.
Too long have I walked a desolate way,
Too long stumbled down a maze
Bewildered.
