Today’s Poem ~ Meeting at Night

Meeting at Night

Robert Browning

THE gray sea and the long black land;
And the yellow half-moon large and low;
And the startled little waves that leap
In fiery ringlets from their sleep,
As I gain the cove with pushing prow,
And quench its speed i' the slushy sand.

Then a mile of warm sea-scented beach;
Three fields to cross till a farm appears;
A tap at the pane, the quick sharp scratch
And blue spurt of a lighted match,
And a voice less loud, thro' its joys and fears,
Than the two hearts beating each to each!

Today’s Poem ~ She Walks in Beauty

She walks in Beauty

Lord Byron

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellow'd to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o'er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

And on that cheek, and o'er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

Today’s Poem ~ Time Is

Time Is

Henry Van Dyke

Time is
Too Slow for those who Wait,
Too Swift for those who Fear,
Too Long for those who Grieve,
Too Short for those who Rejoice;
But for those who Love,
Time is not.

Today’s Poem ~ If Only Thou Art True

If Only Thou Art True

George Barlow

IF only a single Rose is left,
Why should the summer pine?
A blade of grass in a rocky cleft;
A single star to shine.
—Why should I sorrow if all be lost,
If only thou art mine?
If only a single Bluebell gleams
Bright on the barren heath,
Still of that flower the summer dreams,
Not of his August wreath.
—Why should I sorrow if thou art mine,
Love, beyond change and death?
If only once on a wintry day
The sun shines forth in the blue,
He gladdens the groves till they laugh as in May
And dream of the touch of the dew.
—Why should I sorrow if all be false,
If only thou art true?

Today’s Poem ~ Cheer

Cheer

Robert W. Service

It's a mighty good world, so it is, dear lass,
      When even the worst is said.
     There's a smile and a tear, a sigh and a cheer,
      But better be living than dead;
     A joy and a pain, a loss and a gain;
      There's honey and may be some gall:
     Yet still I declare, foul weather or fair,
      It's a mighty good world after all.

     For look, lass! at night when I break from the fight,
      My Kingdom's awaiting for me;
     There's comfort and rest, and the warmth of your breast,
      And little ones climbing my knee.
     There's fire-light and song — Oh, the world may be wrong!
      Its empires may topple and fall:
     My home is my care — if gladness be there,
      It's a mighty good world after all.

     O heart of pure gold! I have made you a fold,
      It's sheltered, sun-fondled and warm.
     O little ones, rest!  I have fashioned a nest;
      Sleep on! you are safe from the storm.
     For there's no foe like fear, and there's no friend like cheer,
      And sunshine will flash at our call;
     So crown Love as King, and let us all sing —
      "It's a mighty good world after all."

Today’s Poem ~ Faith

Faith

Alfred Lord Tennyson

I.
Doubt no longer that the Highest is the wisest and the best,
Let not all that saddens Nature blight thy hope or break thy rest,
Quail not at the fiery mountain, at the shipwreck, or the rolling
Thunder, or the rending earthquake, or the famine, or the pest!

II.
Neither mourn if human creeds be lower than the heart’s desire!
Thro’ the gates that bar the distance comes a gleam of what is higher.
Wait till Death has flung them open, when the man will make the Maker
Dark no more with human hatreds in the glare of deathless fire!

Today’s Poem ~ Gifts

Gifts

Sara Teasdale

I gave my first love laughter,
I gave my second tears,
I gave my third love silence
Through all the years.

My first love gave me singing,
My second eyes to see,
But oh, it was my third love
Who gave my soul to me.

Today’s Poem ~ A Hope

A Hope

Charles Kingsley

  Twin stars, aloft in ether clear,
         Around each other roll alway,
    Within one common atmosphere
         Of their own mutual light and day.

    And myriad happy eyes are bent
         Upon their changeless love alway;
    As, strengthened by their one intent,
         They pour the flood of life and day.

    So we through this world’s waning night
         May, hand in hand, pursue our way;
    Shed round us order, love, and light,
         And shine unto the perfect day.

Today’s Poem ~ My Love’s Gift

My Love’s Gift

Juliana Horatia Ewing

    You ask me what–since we must part–
    You shall bring home to me;
    Bring back a pure and faithful heart,
    As true as mine to thee.
    I ask not wealth nor fame,
    I only ask for thee,
    Thyself–and that dear self the same–
    My love, bring back to me!

    You talk of gems from foreign lands,
    Of treasure, spoil, and prize.
    Ah, love! I shall not search your hands,
    But look into your eyes.
    I ask not wealth nor fame,
    I only ask for thee,
    Thyself–and that dear self the same–
    My love, bring back to me!

    You speak of glory and renown,
    With me to share your pride,
    Unbroken faith is all the crown
    I ask for as your bride.
    I ask not wealth nor fame,
    I only ask for thee,
    Thyself–and that dear self the same–
    My love, bring back to me!

    You bid me with hope’s eager gaze
    Behold fair fortune come.
    I only dream I see your face
    Beside the hearth at home.
    I ask not wealth nor fame,
    I do but ask for thee!
    Thyself–and that dear self the same–
    May God restore to me!

Today’s Poem ~ Give Us Love & Give Us Peace

Give Us Love and Give Us Peace

Jean Ingelow

One morning, oh! so early, my beloved, my beloved,
    All the birds were singing blithely, as if never they would cease;
    ‘Twas a thrush sang in my garden, “Hear the story, hear the story!”
        And the lark sang, “Give us glory!”
        And the dove said, “Give us peace!”

    Then I listened, oh! so early, my beloved, my beloved,
    To that murmur from the woodland of the dove, my dear, the dove;
    When the nightingale came after, “Give us fame to sweeten duty!”
        When the wren sang, “Give us beauty!”
        She made answer, “Give us love!”

    Sweet is spring, and sweet the morning, my beloved, my beloved;
    Now for us doth spring, doth morning, wait upon the year’s increase,
    And my prayer goes up, “Oh, give us, crowned in youth with marriage glory,
        Give for all our life’s dear story,
        Give us love, and give us peace!”
