Young children rapidly learn when they begin to meet other children that the world is not all about them. They learn, sometimes, painfully, that life is full of give and take. Sometimes, winning and losing. I see many adults who feel the world is all about them and their needs. These types of people have learned to manipulate, spin, and attack anyone who does not view the world from their viewpoint. Life is a lot better when we realize we have to work together for everyone’s benefit. When life becomes a zero-sum game, power triumphs over people. It’s time for a change.

A Better Life ~ There is Another Way
We’re never stuck. There is always another way. We may not see the other way, however, if we keep looking we’ll find a better way. Keep looking, talk to other people, read everything you can about your challenge. You’ll find it. There is another way.

Why get angry when things don’t turn out the way you want them to turn out? The best ball teams don’t win every game. The best ball teams know there’s another game tomorrow. They leave the loss behind and concentrate on preparing for the next game. They know that’s the only place they have a chance to win. Don’t waste time and energy on being angry about something that happened, put your energy into what you can do today or tomorrow.

Houses have many doors. It is a metaphor for our minds. When we close all the doors but one, we limit what can come in. With only one door open, we may fall into the trap of only allowing what we want to hear to enter. The more doors we open, the greater our understanding of the world around us. The greatest fear to opening all the doors is that we may have to modify what has become fixed in our minds.

A neighbor was venting on a political issue. I listened and let my neighbor vent. There was no need to point out our differences. I was sure we both have blind spots regarding the issue. I didn’t lose my perspective by listening. I even learned why my neighbor felt so strongly. That was important for me. Sometimes it’s better to listen and let another release his/her emotional backup.
Something to Think About
Why keep going in the same direction if things are not working out. It may be time to take a new direction, any direction other than the direction in which we are headed. It takes courage to admit it isn’t working. it takes courage to slam the brakes. It takes courage to change course. We know the answer if we continue on the same course. We also know if we change course we have a chance at something better. What do we have to lose?

Nothing is real to us until we experience it. I recall seeing photos of the Grand Canyon (U.S). The photos were beautiful, but did not compare to my experience of visiting the Grand Canyon. In a similar way, we can read all the books we want about grieving, but they cannot convey the experience one feels of losing a loved one. Experience teaches us at a deeper level than the written word or a photo. With each new experiences we become more deeply connected to all humanity.

I like being around folks who question everything. They make me think. I may not like their questions, but their questions encourage me to find answers. I become an inquirer. When I begin to ask questions, I open the world of possibilities. Who knows what I’ll find. Only the courageous dare to travel this road. They know what they’ve held on to may no longer be valid.
Something to Think About
We’ve got one life to live. How’s it going for you? If it’s going great, keep it rolling. If it’s not going so well, here’s some good news. Each sunrise is a new chance. Each sunrise is a chance to change direction. Each sunrise offers a new opportunity to change our attitude toward what’s going on. One thing is sure if things are not going well and you keep going down the same road, the outcome isn’t going change. Slam the brakes, take a different road, you deserve a good life.

I like my independence. I like to make my decisions without external interference. I like to choose my own path. I don’t always make the best decisions, but they are my decisions and I’ll take responsibility for them. For me, freedom is important. It marks my footprints. How about you? Are you independent or dependent? Are you a free spirit moving where the wind moves you? Do you take responsibility for your decisions good or bad?
