It Is Not Enoough ~ Poem by David Whyte

It is Not Enough

David Whyte

It is not enough to know.
It is not enough to follow
the inward road conversing in secret.

It is not enough to see straight ahead,
to gaze at the unborn
thinking the silence belongs to you.

It is not enough to hear
even the tiniest edge of rain.

You must go to the place
where everything waits,
there, when you finally rest,
even one word will do,
one word or the palm of your hand
turning outward
in the gesture of gift.

And now we are truly afraid
to find the great silence
asking so little.

One word, one word only.

“The Flower” a Poem by Lord Alfred Tennyson

The Flower

Lord Alfred Tennyson

Once in a golden hour
I cast to earth a seed.
Up there came a flower,
The people said, a weed.

To and fro they went
Thro’ my garden bower,
And muttering discontent
Cursed me and my flower.

Then it grew so tall
It wore a crown of light,
But thieves from o’er the wall
Stole the seed by night.

Sow’d it far and wide
By every town and tower,
Till all the people cried,
“Splendid is the flower!”

Read my little fable:
He that runs may read.
Most can raise the flowers now,
For all have got the seed.

And some are pretty enough,
And some are poor indeed;
And now again the people
Call it but a weed.

Something to Think About

The calendar on my iPhone will remind me of an appointment. I’ll set a reminder on my digital assistant (Alexa) to remind me to buy a birthday gift. As much as we plan and organize our coming days, they remain a mystery. When we wake we step into the unknown. The day may hold great opportunities, challenges, or a combination of both. It takes courage to walk into the unknown filled with confidence and the belief that we are stronger than any challenge. And, with the hope that only good things will come our way. Keep your eyes and heart open for great opportunities. Your journey to date has prepared you to face and defeat any challenge you face.
