Intoxicated by the Wine of Love ~ A Poem by Farid al-Din Attar

Intoxicated by the Wine of Love

Farid al-Din Attar

Intoxicated by the Wine of Love.
From each a mystic silence Love demands.
What do all seek so earnestly? ‘Tis Love.
What do they whisper to each other? Love.
Love is the subject of their inmost thoughts.
In Love no longer ‘thou’ and ‘I’ exist,
For Self has passed away in the Beloved.
Now will I draw aside the veil from Love,
And in the temple of mine inmost soul,
Behold the Friend; Incomparable Love.
He who would know the secret of both worlds,
Will find the secret of them both, is Love.

Poem for Today ~ Bread and Wine by Countee Cullen

Bread and Wine

Countee Cullen

From death of star to new star’s birth,
This ache of limb, this throb of head,
This sweaty shop, this smell of earth,
For this we pray, “Give daily bread.”

Then tenuous with dreams the night,
The feel of soft brown hands in mine,
Strength from your lips for one more fight
Bread’s not so dry when dipped in wine.

Feel Good Tip for Today ~ Don’t Overlook the Smallest of Things

I like dandelions. As a kid my dad would take me to pick dandelions for dinner’s salad.  My mom would take me to pick dandelion flowers to make dandelion wine.  I let the dandelion flowers bloom in my yard. I don’t see them as a weed. I see them as food,  drink, and nectar for the bees.

Today’s Poem ~ Without You

Without You
Hermann Hesse
My Pillow gazes upon me at night
Empty as a gravestone;
I never thought it would be so bitter
To be alone,
Not to lie down asleep in your hair.

I lie alone in a silent house,
The hanging lamp darkened,
And gently stretch out my hands
To gather in yours,
And softly press my warm mouth
Toward you, and kiss myself, exhausted and weak-
Then suddenly I’m awake
And all around me the cold night grows still.
The star in the window shines clearly-
Where is your blond hair,
Where your sweet mouth?

Now I drink pain in every delight
And poison in every wine;
I never knew it would be so bitter
To be alone,
Alone, without you.
