Victory in Defeat
Edwin Markham
Ā Defeat may serve as well as victory
Ā Ā To shake the soul and let the glory out.
Ā Ā When the great oak is straining in the wind,
Ā Ā The boughs drink in new beauty, and the trunk
Ā Ā Sends down a deeper root on the windward side.
Ā Ā Only the soul that knows the mighty grief
Ā Ā Can know the mighty rapture. Sorrows come
Ā Ā To stretch out spaces in the heart for joy.
