Use “If … Then” StatemenSts to Stay Positive
Just two syllablesāif and thenācan help you keep it together, even when your sister pushes your buttons or your boss is frustrating you. According to research from the University of Winnipeg, in Manitoba, reframing thoughts about a situation with āifā and āthenā statements may help you manage fear, sadness, fatigue, self-doubt, or even disgust. Try this: Think of a challenge youāre facing. Thatās your āifā clause (example: āIf Iām under the gun on a deadlineā¦ā). Then decide what kind of positive response you would like to have. Thatās your āthenā clause (āā¦then I will keep a cool headā). Put them together and thatās what you should say to yourself to make stressful circumstances seem more manageable. Itās the perfect create-your-own-mantra formula.
