✒️ Writers’ Wisdom ~ Two Questions that Guide Novels

Spread the love

“Two questions form the foundation of all novels: ‘What if?’ and ‘What next?’ (A third question, ‘What now?’, is one the author asks himself every 10 minutes or so; but it’s more a cry than a question.) Every novel begins with the speculative question, What if ‘X’ happened? That’s how you start.” ~ Tom Clancy

    • Hi Terveen, thanks for your comments. When I read Tom Clancy’s writing advice, I took a 3 x 5 card and sat it on my desk leaning it against a lamp. The more I reflected on the two questions, the more I thought how that advice can apply to life. What if . . . I did this? What’s next …? Ah, my mind is like a monarch butterfly flitting from one flower to the next. LOL Shine on, and light it up. Ray
