The Heart of a Tree
Henry Cuyler Bunner
What does he plant who plants a tree?
Ā Ā Ā He plants a friend of sun and sky;
He plants the flag of breezes free;
Ā Ā Ā The shaft of beauty, towering high;
Ā Ā Ā He plants a home to heaven anigh;
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā For song and mother-croon of bird
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā In hushed and happy twilight heardā
The treble of heaven’s harmonyā
These things he plants who plants a tree.
What does he plant who plants a tree?
Ā Ā Ā He plants cool shade and tender rain,
And seed and bud of days to be,
Ā Ā Ā And years that fade and flush again;
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā He plants the glory of the plain;
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā He plants the forest’s heritage;
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā The harvest of a coming age;
The joy that unborn eyes shall seeā
These things he plants who plants a tree.
What does he plant who plants a tree?
Ā Ā Ā He plants, in sap and leaf and wood,
In love of home and loyalty
Ā Ā Ā And far-cast thought of civic goodā
Ā Ā Ā His blessings on the neighborhood,
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Who in the hollow of His hand
Holds all the growth of all our landā
A nation’s growth from sea to sea
Stirs in his heart who plants a tree.
