First Love: A Poem by John Clare

First Love

John Clare

I ne’er was struck before that hour
With love so sudden and so sweet.
Her face it bloomed like a sweet flower
And stole my heart away complete.

My face turned pale, a deadly pale.
My legs refused to walk away,
And when she looked what could I ail
My life and all seemed turned to clay.

And then my blood rushed to my face
And took my eyesight quite away.
The trees and bushes round the place
Seemed midnight at noonday.

I could not see a single thing,
Words from my eyes did start.
They spoke as chords do from the string,
And blood burnt round my heart.

Are flowers the winter’s choice
Is love’s bed always snow
She seemed to hear my silent voice
Not love appeals to know.

I never saw so sweet a face
As that I stood before.
My heart has left its dwelling place
And can return no more.

A Healthy Start to the Day with Overnight Oatmeal

Overnight oatmeal can be just as healthy as cooked oatmeal, depending on the ingredients you use. The main difference is in texture and temperature: overnight oats are soaked in liquid, usually cold, and absorb the liquid overnight, whereas cooked oatmeal is warm and often has a softer, more porridge-like consistency.

Health Benefits:

  • Both overnight and cooked oatmeal are excellent sources of fiber, especially beta-glucan, which is known for its cholesterol-lowering and heart health benefits.
  • They’re also good sources of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
  • The healthiness can vary based on what you add to the oats. Ingredients like fresh fruits, nuts, and seeds can enhance the nutritional profile.

Making Overnight Oatmeal:

  1. Basic Ingredients:
    • Rolled oats: Use old-fashioned rolled oats for the best texture.
    • Liquid: Milk (dairy or plant-based), yogurt, or water. The liquid should be in the same proportion or slightly more than the oats.
    • Sweeteners (optional): Honey, maple syrup, or stevia.
    • Flavorings: Vanilla extract, cinnamon, or cocoa powder.
  2. Instructions:
    • In a jar or bowl, combine oats with your liquid of choice.
    • Add in any sweeteners or flavorings.
    • Stir in extras like chia seeds or protein powder if desired.
    • Cover and refrigerate overnight (or for at least 6 hours).
  3. Serving:
    • Before eating, stir the oats and check the consistency. Add a little more liquid if they’re too thick.
    • Top with your favorite toppings like fresh fruit, nuts, seeds, or a dollop of yogurt.

Remember, the key to healthiness is in the balance and quality of ingredients. Avoiding overly processed add-ins and excessive sweeteners will keep your overnight oats as healthy as the traditionally cooked version.

Episode 18: A Step Forward While Grieving: I Began Playing Music

In Episode 18 of my podcast, Journey From Grief to Healing, I played music in my home. I hadn’t played music since Babe entered the hospital six months earlier. The first song that randomly played was Garth Brooks’ Unanswered Prayers.’ It wasn’t easy, but I listened to it.

Thinking Out Loud: Turn Your Fantasy into Reality

“It’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting.”

 Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist

NOTE: 2024 is in front of us. Call it a dream, adventure, quest, or pursuit embrace it not as some far off thing you’ll do once you retire. Don’t put it off any longer. You don’t have to do everything. Choose something that’s been gnawing at you. Turn to fantasy of the dream into a reality to be accomplished this year. Think of the story you’ll have to tell. Turn yourself loose, go on your hero’s quest.

Kind Hearts: An Anonymously Written Poem

Kind Hearts

Anonymous

Kind hearts are the gardens,
Kind thoughts are the roots,
Kind words are the blossoms,
Kind deeds are the fruits;
Love is the sweet sunshine
That warms into life,
For only in darkness
Grow hatred and strife.
