Episode 55: Nurturing my Garden of Healing – My Letter of Gratitude to Babe

In Episode 55 of my podcast, Journey from Grief to Healing, I express my gratitude to Babe in the form of a letter. Writing the letter of gratitude to Babe didn’t ease my pain of grieving, but it did bring back many good memories and I smiled. Yes, I smiled writing this letter, grieving couldn’t prevent it. My good memories of us together overwhelmed grieving for a moment.

Thinking Out Loud:

A wise man makes his own decisions, an ignorant man follows the public opinion. ~ Grantland Rice

NOTE: Some years ago there was a BBC show called “The Prisoner.” The show developed a cult following and is available on YouTube. The main character, a former spy, is taken to a remote setting called The Village. He is assigned a number. In his case it is Number 6 (his identity). During the entire series he rebels against being called a number. He shouts, “I am not a number, I am a free man.” When we surrender our freedom to make our choices to another (whether it’s a person, cult figure, or media), we become a prisoner. When we make our choices, good or bad, and take responsibility for them we can shout, “I am a free man/woman.”

In the Beginning: A Poem by Dylan Thomas

In The Beginning

Dylan Thomas

In the beginning was the three-pointed star,
One smile of light across the empty face,
One bough of bone across the rooting air,
The substance forked that marrowed the first sun,
And, burning ciphers on the round of space,
Heaven and hell mixed as they spun.

In the beginning was the pale signature,
Three-syllabled and starry as the smile,
And after came the imprints on the water,
Stamp of the minted face upon the moon;
The blood that touched the crosstree and the grail
Touched the first cloud and left a sign.

In the beginning was the mounting fire
That set alight the weathers from a spark,
A three-eyed, red-eyed spark, blunt as a flower,
Life rose and spouted from the rolling seas,
Burst in the roots, pumped from the earth and rock
The secret oils that drive the grass.

In the beginning was the word, the word
That from the solid bases of the light
Abstracted all the letters of the void;
And from the cloudy bases of the breath
The word flowed up, translating to the heart
First characters of birth and death.

In the beginning was the secret brain.
The brain was celled and soldered in the thought
Before the pitch was forking to a sun;
Before the veins were shaking in their sieve,
Blood shot and scattered to the winds of light
The ribbed original of love.

10 Questions Healthy People Ask About the Food they Eat

Healthy individuals often approach their diet with a sense of curiosity and responsibility, aiming to understand how their food choices affect their overall well-being. Here are ten questions that such individuals might frequently ask about their food:

  1. What are the nutritional contents?
    • This question helps in understanding the macro- and micronutrient profile of the food, including calories, protein, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals, to ensure a balanced diet.
  2. Is this food processed?
    • Identifying the level of processing helps to choose foods that are closer to their natural state, which are generally considered healthier.
  3. Does this fit into my dietary needs?
    • Whether someone has specific dietary restrictions due to health conditions, allergies, or personal choice (like plant-based diets), this question ensures the food aligns with those needs.
  4. Where does this food come from?
    • Understanding the source of the food, including how it was grown or raised, can provide insights into its environmental impact and ethical considerations.
  5. Are there any additives or preservatives?
    • This question helps to avoid unnecessary chemicals and additives that are often found in processed foods.
  6. How does this food impact my energy levels and mood?
    • Certain foods can affect energy levels and mood due to their nutrient content, sugar levels, and how they’re metabolized by the body.
  7. What is the portion size?
    • Portion control is crucial for maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding overeating, even of healthy foods.
  8. Is this food sustainable?
    • Sustainability concerns can lead one to prefer locally sourced, seasonal, or organically produced food to minimize environmental impact.
  9. How will this food affect my long-term health?
    • Considering the long-term effects on health, including the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, or cancer, is important for making dietary choices.
  10. Can this food be part of a balanced meal?
    • This question ensures that each meal has a good balance of nutrients, incorporating various food groups to meet dietary needs.

Asking these questions reflects a proactive approach to nutrition, focusing on the quality of ingredients, the benefits and potential drawbacks of different foods, and how they fit into one’s overall health goals and dietary patterns.

Thinking Out Loud: Unlocking Your Hidden Potential: Beyond Flaws to a Future Filled with Joy and Hope

We have within ourselves Enough to fill the present day with joy, And overspread the future years with hope. ~ William Wordsworth

NOTE: We see only the tip of the iceberg of what we are capable of accomplishing or becoming. Yet to be discovered in each of us is an abundance of talent waiting to be nurtured and brought to fruition. Imagine a freshly painted white wall that is 4 m by 5 m. Someone comes along and paints a round black circle 7 cm in diameter. Immediately our eyes are drawn to the black circle and we ignore the white part of the wall. Don’t focus on a personal flaw or fault. Focus on your goodness, what you can do, and what you are capable of doing.
