Get Healthy: Muscle Cramps? Here’s Help

Muscle cramps can be both uncomfortable and disruptive, and diet plays a crucial role in preventing them. Here are some dietary modifications that can help prevent muscle cramps:

  1. Increase Magnesium Intake: Magnesium is essential for muscle health, including the prevention of cramps. Foods rich in magnesium include spinach, almonds, cashews, peanuts, whole grains, soybeans, avocado, and bananas.
  2. Boost Potassium Levels: Potassium helps maintain electrolyte balance and muscle function. Include potassium-rich foods in your diet such as bananas, oranges, potatoes, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, spinach, and beans.
  3. Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can lead to muscle cramps. Ensure you’re drinking enough fluids throughout the day. Water is the best choice, but you can also hydrate with beverages like herbal teas and coconut water. Aim for about 8 glasses (about 2 liters) of water a day, but this can vary based on activity level, climate, and individual needs.
  4. Incorporate Calcium-Rich Foods: Calcium plays a key role in muscle contractions. Include calcium-rich foods in your diet such as dairy products (milk, yogurt, cheese), fortified plant milks, leafy green vegetables (kale, broccoli), and almonds.
  5. Add Sodium Moderately: While excessive sodium can be detrimental to health, a moderate amount is necessary for muscle function and fluid balance, especially if you sweat a lot due to exercise. If you’re active and sweat profusely, including a small amount of sodium in your diet can help prevent cramps. This can come from natural sources like celery, beets, and table salt added in moderation to foods.
  6. Eat Foods with Vitamin D: Vitamin D aids in calcium absorption and muscle function. Foods rich in vitamin D include fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines), fortified foods (milk, orange juice, cereal), cheese, and egg yolks. Sun exposure also helps the body produce vitamin D, so consider spending some time outdoors in the sunlight.
  7. Monitor and Adjust Your Diet Based on Activity Levels: If you’re very active, you might need to increase your intake of these nutrients to match your body’s demands.

Remember, while these dietary adjustments can help prevent muscle cramps, they’re part of a broader approach to wellness that includes regular exercise, stretching, and adequate rest. If muscle cramps persist or are severe, it’s a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying conditions.

The Day to Free Yourself from Grieving

Welcome to Episode 75 of ‘Journey from Grief to Healing‘ with Dr. Ray Calabrese. In this enlightening episode, Dr. Ray discusses the profound emotion and process of grieving that we all go through, emphasizing the idea that there will come a day when we must declare ourselves free from it.

Each person’s grieving timetable is unique and unpredictable, with no set calendar time signaling the end of grief. Sometimes, the grieving process can be lengthy, extending from formal cultural ceremonies to the informal grieving that remains with us when we are left alone.

As we navigate the multifaceted emotions of anger, guilt, sadness, fear, depression, and confusion during our grieving period, we also embark on a journey of self-discovery. Among the hard lessons we learn about life and ourselves, an enlightening realization of our resilience emerges.

At some point, our internal messenger will indicate when it’s time to move on, transitioning us into a stage of acceptance and inner freedom. And while this does not imply that the pain dissolves, it symbolizes our decision to live and experience life, despite the hurt. It is the conscious decision to step away from the grasp of grief, hold onto hope, and embrace the promise of a better tomorrow.

This episode draws upon references from F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway, among others, to underscore the transformative power of embracing change and resilience. The story of an older couple dealing with the loss of a partner further illustrates the societal misconceptions concerning grieving that can hinder personal healing.

Dr. Ray encourages listeners to stay strong, resilient, and hopeful for brighter days. The journey of healing is not linear or prescribed; it is deeply personal. Nonetheless, the power to break free from the constraints of grieving and embrace life with renewed vigor ultimately lies within us.

Today’s Thought: A Smile is All it Takes

Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing. ~ Mother Teresa

NOTE: I go for a walk each evening after I finish my dinner, clear the table, clean up the mess I’ve made, and turn on the dish washer. It’s a gratitude walk. I give thanks for each of things I am grateful for that I witnessed during my day while I walk. I can’t help but smile as my list grows. I’ll see other people walking, I give them a smile and a “Have a great evening” greeting. Most don’t have a smile when I see them, but when I give them my smile and greeting, they smile and return a greeting. For a brief moment, they let their troubles go. For a brief moment, their world is a bit kinder. It’s easy to do, all one has to do is give a smile and a greeting to bring a bit of sunshine into someone else’s life.

Get Healthy: Staying in Bed: Harmful or Healthful?

Staying in bed for prolonged periods, especially when it’s not medically necessary, can have several negative effects on one’s health. Here are some of the main issues associated with prolonged bed rest:

  1. Muscle Atrophy and Weakness: Lack of physical activity leads to muscle atrophy, where muscles waste away due to lack of use. This can result in weakness and decreased ability to perform daily activities.
  2. Joint Stiffness and Pain: Continuous inactivity can cause the joints to become stiff and painful, reducing range of motion and flexibility.
  3. Bone Density Loss: Physical activity is crucial for maintaining bone density. Prolonged inactivity can lead to decreased bone density and increased risk of osteoporosis and fractures.
  4. Cardiovascular Health Risks: Staying in bed for extended periods can affect cardiovascular health, increasing the risk of developing heart disease and decreasing cardiovascular fitness.
  5. Respiratory Issues: Bedrest can lead to a higher risk of developing pulmonary complications, such as pneumonia. It can also affect lung function over time.
  6. Mental Health Effects: Extended periods of inactivity and isolation can negatively impact mental health, leading to feelings of depression, anxiety, and a decrease in cognitive function.
  7. Circulatory Problems: Prolonged bed rest increases the risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and other circulatory issues due to reduced blood flow.
  8. Skin Health: Being in bed for too long can lead to pressure ulcers or bed sores due to prolonged pressure on certain parts of the body.

It’s important to balance rest with physical activity, even if it’s light or modified, to maintain health and prevent the negative consequences of prolonged bed rest. For individuals who are required to stay in bed due to medical conditions, healthcare providers often recommend physical therapy exercises to mitigate some of these effects.

Today’s Inspiring Quote: Free Yourself

If you don’t care about what people think, you already passed the first step of success. ~ Paulo Coelho

An Hour ~ A Poem by Henry Van Dyke

An Hour

Henry Van Dyke

You only promised me a single hour:
But in that hour I journeyed through a year
Of life: the joy of finding you,—the fear
Of losing you again,—the sense of power
To make you all my own,—the sudden shower
Of tears that came because you were more dear
Than words could ever tell you,—then,—the clear
Soft rapture when I plucked love’s crimson flower.
An hour,—a year,—I felt your bosom rise
And fall with mystic tides, and saw the gleam
Of undiscovered stars within your eyes,—
A year,—an hour? I knew not, for the stream
Of love had carried me to Paradise,
Where all the forms of Time are like a dream.

Today’s Thought: Release Your Fears

Fear is the cheapest room in the house. I would like to see you living in better conditions. ~ Hafez

NOTE: I read the news online. I avoid cable talk and news shows. They have one thing in common, they all use one ingredient, fear. They advocate for their position by showing why I should be fearful of the opposing position. There’s no effort to discover middle ground or to sort out the truth from fiction. I recently saw a late night host do a bit on billionaires who are building survivalist bunkers. What are they afraid of? One billionaire even created a fiery moat around his bunker. Fear has gripped them tighter than a boa constrictor wrapping itself around its prey. Fear parallelizes. Fear places a wall in front of freedom. Fear restricts creative thinking. Fear holds us prisoner inside a cell and leaves the cell door unlocked knowing we will be too fearful to let go of our fears to open the door and walk away. What fears are you holding on to? What fears do you have that are irrational? How would you feel if you could let go of your fears and start living?
