To Laugh Often and Much ~ A Poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson

To Laugh Often and Much

Ralph Waldo Emerson

To laugh often and much;

to win the respect of the intelligent people

and the affection of children;

to earn the appreciation of honest critics

and endure the betrayal of false friends;

to appreciate beauty;

to find the best in others;

to leave the world a bit better

whether by a healthy child,
a garden patch,
or a redeemed social condition;

to know that one life has breathed easier

because you lived here.

This is to have succeeded.

Get Healthy: You May Like Alcoholic Beverages, But Your Skin Doesn’t

Alcoholic drinks can have several effects on the human skin, primarily due to how alcohol impacts the body’s systems and hydration levels. Here’s a summary of the main effects:

  1. Dehydration: Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it increases the production of urine, leading to dehydration if not enough water is consumed. Dehydrated skin can appear dry, dull, and aged since hydration is key to maintaining plump, elastic, and vibrant skin.
  2. Inflammation: Consumption of alcohol can trigger inflammatory responses in the body, which can exacerbate skin conditions such as rosacea, acne, and psoriasis. Inflammation can also lead to puffiness and redness of the skin.
  3. Impaired skin barrier function: Alcohol can negatively affect the health of the skin barrier, which is essential for keeping harmful microbes out and moisture in. An impaired skin barrier can lead to issues such as increased sensitivity, dryness, and infection risk.
  4. Premature aging: Chronic alcohol consumption can lead to premature aging signs, including wrinkles and fine lines. This effect is partly due to dehydration and the impairment of the body’s ability to produce collagen, a protein that keeps the skin firm and elastic.
  5. Dilated blood vessels: Alcohol consumption can cause the blood vessels in the skin to dilate, leading to a flushed appearance. Over time, these vessels can become damaged, leading to a condition known as telangiectasia, where small blood vessels become visible on the skin’s surface.
  6. Nutrient depletion: Alcohol can affect the absorption and processing of vital nutrients that are important for skin health, such as vitamins A, C, and E, and zinc. These nutrients are crucial for skin repair, protection against damage, and maintaining a healthy complexion.

While moderate alcohol consumption might not lead to severe skin issues for everyone, excessive and chronic drinking can have noticeable effects on the skin. Staying hydrated, consuming alcohol in moderation, and maintaining a healthy diet can help mitigate some of these effects.

Today’s Thought: Buckle Up Buddy, It’s Going to be A Wild Ride

You do not need to know precisely what is happening, or exactly where it is all going. What you need is to recognize the possibilities and challenges offered by the present moment, and to embrace them with courage, faith and hope. ~ Thomas Merton

NOTE: I envy folks that have it all together, have a plan, and seemingly it all comes together for them. My experience is that life is a wild ride. Plan as I may, sometimes the plans work out, more often than not, I’m scrambling to make modifications. And, there are times where my best plans crash to the floor and all the king’s horses and all the king’s men can’t put them back together again. Life offers us a wonderful coin where one side is possibilities and the other side is challenges. We need to make sure we’re wearing our seatbelt because there will be twists and turns and often no guardrail to prevent us from going over the side. It takes courage, faith, and hope to buckle up and ride. Don’t miss it, you never know where it’s going to take you.

Whatever Odds There Are ~ A Poem by Henry Grantland Rice

Whatever Odds There Are

Henry Grantland Rice

GIVE me but room to fight my way,
I ask no other gift from Fate;
Though it should crowd on me at bay,
Where only ghosts and shadows wait.

Shadows of old defeats blown by,
Ghosts of old dreams drawn from life’s pit;
Yet all I ask is room to try
And prove Fate cannot make me quit.

No glint of glory from the height,
No flare of fame to call me far;
Merely the ground to make my fight
Against whatever odds there are.

Get Healthy: Check the Anger at the Door, It’s Unhealthy

Holding on to anger can have a range of debilitating effects on both your physical and mental health, as well as on your relationships and overall quality of life. Here are some of the key impacts:

  1. Physical Health: Persistent anger can trigger a range of physical health issues. It activates the body’s ‘fight or flight’ response, leading to an increase in stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. This can elevate blood pressure, increase the risk of heart disease, weaken the immune system, and contribute to inflammation, among other health issues.
  2. Mental Health: Anger can also take a toll on your mental health. It is associated with an increased risk of anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders. Persistent anger can lead to an overall negative outlook on life, diminish one’s ability to enjoy life, and can even affect cognitive functions like memory and decision-making.
  3. Relationships: Anger can severely strain relationships with family, friends, and colleagues. It can lead to aggressive behavior, arguments, and a breakdown in communication, eroding trust and making it difficult to maintain healthy and supportive relationships.
  4. Quality of Life: Being in a constant state of anger can prevent individuals from experiencing happiness and satisfaction in life. It can overshadow positive emotions, making it hard to appreciate good moments and achievements. This can lead to a cycle of negativity and dissatisfaction.
  5. Behavioral Issues: Anger can lead to harmful behaviors, including substance abuse as a coping mechanism, aggression, and even violence. These behaviors can have legal, social, and personal consequences.
  6. Work and Academic Performance: Anger can affect concentration, motivation, and the ability to work or study effectively. It may lead to conflicts in the workplace or academic settings, negatively impacting performance and opportunities.

Understanding and managing anger through healthy outlets and techniques, such as mindfulness, exercise, therapy, and communication skills, can help mitigate these debilitating effects. Strategies like Appreciative Inquiry, focusing on the positive and potential in people and situations, can also be a powerful tool in transforming anger into constructive and positive outcomes.
