Get Healthy: Do You Have Dry Eyes?

For dry eyes, incorporating certain foods into your diet that are rich in specific nutrients can help alleviate symptoms. These nutrients include omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A, C, and E, and zinc. Here are some foods that can be beneficial for improving dry eye conditions:

  1. Omega-3 Fatty Acids:
    • Fish: Salmon, mackerel, tuna, and trout are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help to reduce inflammation and improve the oil film produced by the eye’s meibomian glands.
    • Chia Seeds and Flaxseeds: For a plant-based source of omega-3s, these seeds are a great option and can be easily added to your diet through smoothies, oatmeal, or salads.
  2. Vitamin A:
    • Sweet Potatoes, Carrots, and Leafy Greens: These are high in beta-carotene, a type of vitamin A, which is essential for the health of the cornea and for night vision.
    • Eggs: Particularly the yolks, are another good source of vitamin A and lutein, which can help improve eye health.
  3. Vitamin C:
    • Citrus Fruits such as oranges, lemons, and grapefruits, as well as berries, broccoli, and bell peppers, are rich in vitamin C, which supports the health of blood vessels in the eyes.
  4. Vitamin E:
    • Nuts and Seeds, such as almonds, sunflower seeds, and hazelnuts, are packed with vitamin E, an antioxidant that can protect the eyes from free radical damage.
  5. Zinc:
    • Legumes, pumpkin seeds, and lean meats like beef, pork, and poultry are good sources of zinc, which helps the body absorb vitamin A and may reduce the risk of advanced age-related macular degeneration.
  6. Hydration:
    • Water: Not a food, but staying well-hydrated is crucial for maintaining sufficient moisture levels in the eyes. Aim for about 8 glasses of water a day, or more if you’re active or live in a dry climate.

Remember, a balanced diet that includes these nutrients along with regular eye check-ups can help manage and alleviate dry eye symptoms. If your dry eyes persist, it’s a good idea to consult an eye care professional for personalized advice and treatment options.

Today’s Thought: There is a Time to Speak Up

I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. ~ Elie Wiesel

NOTE: We become busy with our work, families, and all the other external forces that knock at our door. In our busyness we often lose sight of those who suffer. The suffering is not only what we see in the nightly news or read on digital media, it happens all around us. It’s as if those who suffer are contagious and if they get too close to us we’ll catch whatever they have. In the 1989 movie, Romero, which portrayed the life of Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador, he says, “The ones who have a voice must speak for those who are voiceless.” That’s a challenge to each of us. Maybe it’s time to speak up for a neighbor, a family member, or a friend.

Before the World Was Made ~ A Poem by William Butler Yeats

Before the World Was Made

William Butler Yeats

If I make the lashes dark
And the eyes more bright
And the lips more scarlet,
Or ask if all be right
From mirror after mirror,
No vanity’s displayed:
I’m looking for the face I had
Before the world was made.

What if I look upon a man
As though on my beloved,
And my blood be cold the while
And my heart unmoved?
Why should he think me cruel
Or that he is betrayed?
I’d have him love the thing that was
Before the world was made.

Unlocking a New Chapter: Embracing Change After Loss ~ Episode 81

In Episode 81 of “Journey from Grief to Healing,” we explore the metaphor of a door that won’t open, an experience that resonates with the journey through grief. This episode delves into the struggle of facing unexpected changes in life, much like the frustration of a mobile key failing to open a hotel room door. Just as we must adapt to a new room when the one we expected is unavailable, we must also learn to navigate the new realities that follow a loss. The episode draws on the wisdom of Helen Keller, who reminds us that new doors of happiness open when old ones close, but often we fixate on the closed door and miss the new opportunities before us. It discusses the challenge of stepping away from what was comfortable and safe, and the necessity of learning new ways to adapt to our current situation. Emphasizing the importance of change, the narrative compares it to learning how to swim in deep waters—the initial panic, the eventual calm, and the discovery of staying afloat. With references to Ray Bradbury and Paulo Coelho, this podcast encourages listeners to redefine happiness and embrace the changes needed to find joy again, advocating a proactive approach to overcoming grief and seeking a brighter tomorrow.

Today’s Thought:

The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision. ~ Helen Keller

NOTE: When we turn inward we lose sight of all that is around us. When we only listen to our voice, we lose our ability to hear the many voices around us. When we fail to test our truths we let fear rule our hearts. The more we isolate ourselves and our thinking the more we become blind to the reality in which we live. Never fear opposing thoughts. They may contain the truth. Stay open to learning and growing.
