Today’s Inspiring Quote: Look Inside – Love What You Find

“And God said, Love your enemy, & I obeyed Him & loved myself.” ~Khalil Gibran

Dialogue ~ A Poem by Nizar Qabbani

Dialogue

Nizar Qabbani

Do not say my love was
A ring or a bracelet.
My love is a siege,
Is the daring and headstrong.
Who, searching sail out to their death.

Do not say my love was
A moon.
My love is a burst of sparks.

Get Healthy: Eliminating These Three Types of Foods May Help You to Lose That Nagging 10 Pounds

  1. Processed and High-Sugar Foods: This includes candies, cookies, cakes, and other sweets, as well as highly processed snack foods. These items are usually high in calories, sugar, and unhealthy fats but low in nutrients. They can also trigger cravings and overeating.
  2. Refined Carbohydrates: Foods like white bread, pasta, and rice have had most of their fiber and nutrients removed. They can lead to a quick spike in blood sugar followed by a crash, which may cause hunger and overeating. Opting for whole-grain alternatives can provide more nutrition and satiety.
  3. Fried and High-Fat Foods: Fast food, fried food, and items high in saturated and trans fats can contribute significantly to calorie intake without providing much nutritional value. These foods can also impact heart health. Choosing cooking methods like baking, grilling, or steaming and focusing on healthy fats from sources like avocados, nuts, and fish can be beneficial.

Remember, moderation is key, and it’s important to focus on a balanced diet that includes a variety of nutrients. Making gradual, sustainable changes, rather than extreme restrictions, can lead to more successful weight management in the long term.

Today’s Thought: Is It Time to Face Hard Truths?

Allow yourself to see what you don’t allow yourself to see. ~ Milton H. Erickson

NOTE: I have a friend who, for the past year, has had one physical setback after another. This friend will email me and tell me about their physical ailments. My friend stirs up controversies. It is almost as if my friend enjoys the stress the controversies bring on. I suggested to my friend that there may be a link between my friend’s physical setbacks and related stress. My friend quickly responded to my email denying the link. I can see it; my friend can’t. In some ways, my friend is addicted to the behavior that causes stress and impacts my friend’s health. When we dare to face the hard truths we open ourselves to healing and growth.

The Kiss ~ A Poem by Anne Sexton

The Kiss

Anne Sexton

My mouth blooms like a cut.
I’ve been wronged all year, tedious
nights, nothing but rough elbows in them
and delicate boxes of Kleenex calling crybaby
crybaby , you fool !

Before today my body was useless.
Now it’s tearing at its square corners.
It’s tearing old Mary’s garments off, knot by knot
and see — Now it’s shot full of these electric bolts.
Zing! A resurrection!

Once it was a boat, quite wooden
and with no business, no salt water under it
and in need of some paint. It was no more
than a group of boards. But you hoisted her, rigged her.
She’s been elected.

My nerves are turned on. I hear them like
musical instruments. Where there was silence
the drums, the strings are incurably playing. You did this.
Pure genius at work. Darling, the composer has stepped
into fire.

Get Healthy: 5 Ways to Improve Your Balance

Improving balance is beneficial for people of all ages, contributing to overall health, fitness, and injury prevention. Here are five ways a person can work on improving their balance each day:

  1. Practice Standing on One Foot: This simple exercise can be done anywhere, anytime. Stand on one foot while brushing your teeth, waiting in line, or while cooking. Switch feet to ensure both sides are worked equally. Try to increase the duration steadily as your balance improves.
  2. Incorporate Balance Exercises into Your Routine: Exercises like Tai Chi, yoga, and Pilates are excellent for improving balance, flexibility, and core strength. They focus on slow, controlled movements and deep breathing, which help in enhancing stability and body awareness.
  3. Use a Balance Board or Stability Ball: Adding a balance board or stability ball to your exercise routine can challenge your balance and engage your core muscles. Sitting on a stability ball instead of a chair or using a balance board while standing at your desk can also provide passive benefits throughout the day.
  4. Focus on Core Strength: The muscles in your abdomen and back play a critical role in maintaining your balance. Incorporating core-strengthening exercises like planks, abdominal crunches, and leg lifts can help improve your stability and reduce the risk of falls.
  5. Mindful Walking: Paying attention to your walk can also help improve balance. Practice walking heel to toe in a straight line, or try walking backwards or sideways. These variations encourage you to focus on your movements and engage the muscles required for balance. Walking on different surfaces (grass, sand, or gravel) can also provide a good balance challenge.

Consistency is key to seeing improvement in balance. Incorporating these exercises and practices into your daily routine, starting with small intervals and gradually increasing as your balance improves, can lead to significant benefits over time. Additionally, always ensure safety while performing balance exercises, especially if you’re prone to falls or have mobility issues.
