Encouraged ~ A Poem by Paul Laurence Dunbar

Encouraged

Paul Laurence Dunbar

Because you love me I have much achieved,
Had you despised me then I must have failed,
But since I knew you trusted and believed,
I could not disappoint you and so prevailed.

Breaking Free from Dysfunctional Grieving Rules

Welcome to episode 85 of Dr. Ray Calabrese’s podcast, Journey from Grief to Healing. In this informative session, Dr. Calabrese unveils the construct of dysfunctional ‘rules’ which have been applied to grief and how they can disrupt the natural process of healing.

Dr. Calabrese draws a compelling parallel between parental instructions from childhood, societal norms, and unspoken rules that often dictate how we process grief. He highlights that there are many rules deeply embedded in our societal norms, cultural expectations, and even family traditions that unknowingly affect our grieving process.

Dr. Calabrese delineates seven common dysfunctional rules associated with grieving. These include: the time limit rule, the strong facade rule, the distraction rule, the replacement rule, the isolation rule, avoidance of talking about the deceased, and comparative grieving. He brings forth the detrimental effects that following such rules might have on a grieving individual, such as heightened stress, a prolonged healing process, feelings of guilt or inadequacy, and isolation.

The podcast emphasizes the importance of recognizing these rules within oneself as the first step toward healthier grieving. Invoking the thought-provoking quote from Jeanette Mentor’s book You’re Not Crazy, You’re Codependent and the poetic verses of Mary Oliver, Dr. Calabrese encourages listeners to challenge these dysfunctional rules, and pay heed to their unique journey of grief and healing.

Concluding with powerful affirmations and sending out uplifting vibes towards the listeners, Dr. Calabrese reminds us all: ‘Never quit. Never give up. Good things are coming your way.’ Tune in to this podcast for insightful lessons and inspirations on grief and healing.

Today’s Thought: Two Videos to Watch

Today’s Thought reflection is taken from Paulo Coelho’s  work, Maktub: An Inspirational Companion to the Alchemist

“If we only watch the video of our failures, we will become paralyzed and unable to act. If we only watch the video of our success, we will end up thinking we are much wiser than we really are. We need both videos.”

NOTE: Wise people learn from their mistakes. When we view ourselves as perfect and incapable of making a mistake we condemn ourselves to failure. Wise people also recognize that the recollection of successes builds and breeds confidence. We use our past successes as a foundation that gives us confidence to Iake on greater challenges.

A Prayer in Spring ~ A Poem by Robert Frost

A Prayer in Spring

Robert Frost

OH, give us pleasure in the flowers today;
And give us not to think so far away
As the uncertain harvest; keep us here
All simply in the springing of the year.

Oh, give us pleasure in the orchard white,
Like nothing else by day, like ghosts by night;
And make us happy in the happy bees,
The swarm dilating round the perfect trees.

And make us happy in the darting bird
That suddenly above the bees is heard,
The meteor that thrusts in with needle bill,
And off a blossom in mid air stands still.

For this is love and nothing else is love,
To which it is reserved for God above
To sanctify to what far ends he will,
But which it only needs that we fulfill.

Get Healthy: 5 Tips for Preventing Skin Cancer

Preventing skin cancer is essential for maintaining your overall health, and there are several effective measures you can take to protect your skin. Here are five tips:

  1. Use Sunscreen Regularly: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 30 or higher to all exposed skin, even on cloudy days. Reapply every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating.
  2. Seek Shade: The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If possible, seek shade during these hours. Remember, UV rays can still reach you on cloudy days or through windows.
  3. Wear Protective Clothing: Long-sleeved shirts, pants, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses can protect your skin from UV rays. Clothes with a UV protection factor (UPF) provide added safety.
  4. Avoid Tanning Beds: Tanning beds emit UV rays that can increase the risk of skin cancer. Opt for self-tanning products instead if you want a tanned look without the risk.
  5. Regular Skin Examinations: Regularly check your skin for new moles, changes to existing moles, or other changes, and consult a healthcare professional if you notice anything suspicious. Early detection is key to effective treatment.

Incorporating these tips into your daily routine can significantly reduce your risk of developing skin cancer.

Today’s Thought: Question, Question, Question

Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~ George Bernard Shaw

The man who asks a question is a fool for a minute, the man who does not ask is a fool for life. ~ Confucius

NOTE: I chose these two quotations because they fit together. Social media pours out false knowledge as if were validated truth. Those who refuse to question it sacrifice their freedom. They allow the lie to control them. When we ask questions we to seek discover deeper meaning and the veracity of what another is saying. Lies and the perpetration of lies do not rest on a strong foundation and crumple in the light of truth.
