Washing produce can significantly reduce pesticide residues that may be present on the surface of fruits and vegetables. While peeling can remove some pesticides, many are found on the skin, which contains important nutrients. Studies have shown that washing with water alone can reduce pesticide residues by about 20-40%, but using a mixture of water and baking soda (about 1 teaspoon of baking soda in 2 cups of water) can be more effective, reducing certain pesticides by up to 96%.
