Today’s Quote: Setbacks are not Final, Get Up, Get Going

“Never confuse a single defeat with a final defeat.” — F. Scott Fitzgerald

Today’s Poem: Nature by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Nature

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

As a fond mother, when the day is o’er,
Leads by the hand her little child to bed,
Half willing, half reluctant to be led,
And leave his broken playthings on the floor,
Still gazing at them through the open door,
Nor wholly reassured and comforted
By promises of others in their stead,
Which though more splendid, may not please him more;
So Nature deals with us, and takes away
Our playthings one by one, and by the hand
Leads us to rest so gently, that we go
Scarce knowing if we wish to go or stay,
Being too full of sleep to understand
How far the unknown transcends the what we know.

Health Facts: A Healthy Diet versus Relying on Supplements

Two proven facts why eating a healthy diet is better than relying solely on supplements are:

  1. Nutrient Synergy: Whole foods provide a complex combination of nutrients, fiber, and beneficial compounds that work together synergistically. This combination optimizes nutrient absorption and promotes better health. For example, fruits and vegetables provide vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber, which together support digestion, immune function, and disease prevention in ways that isolated supplements cannot.
  2. Reduced Health Risks: Consuming whole, nutrient-dense foods has been linked to lower risks of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. In contrast, studies have shown that some supplements, when taken in excess, can increase the risk of health issues. For example, excessive intake of certain vitamins (e.g., vitamin E or beta-carotene) has been associated with higher rates of cancer and other complications. A balanced diet ensures a safer, natural intake of nutrients.

Today’s Thought: Have a Great Day Every Day

I am a gym rat, I can’t escape it. I’ve always enjoyed exercising. When I don’t exercise I know something is missing from my life that is important. I enjoy testing my myself and improving. I enjoy the camaraderie of the friends I’ve made at the gym. As important to me as exercise is, love is so much more important I can’t compare the two. I have five wonderful daughters who love me. Their love is priceless. I have friends and neighbors who love me. Another priceless gift. Love is a two way street. That’s the way it works. If love is important to you, you can’t wait for it to knock on your door. You got to start out each day and love each person who comes into your life. Try it for a couple of months and you’ll be having a great day, every day.

Today’s Poem: On Quitting by Edgar Albert Guest

On Quitting

Edgar Albert Guest

How much grit do you think you’ve got?
Can you quit a thing that you like a lot?
You may talk of pluck; it’s an easy word,
And where’er you go it is often heard;
But can you tell to a jot or guess
Just how much courage you now possess?
You may stand to trouble and keep your grin,
But have you tackled self-discipline?
Have you ever issued commands to you
To quit the things that you like to do,
And then, when tempted and sorely swayed,
Those rigid orders have you obeyed?

Don’t boast of your grit till you’ve tried it out,
Nor prate to men of your courage stout,
For it’s easy enough to retain a grin
In the face of a fight there’s a chance to win,
But the sort of grit that is good to own
Is the stuff you need when you’re all alone.
How much grit do you think you’ve got?
Can you turn from joys that you like a lot?
Have you ever tested yourself to know
How far with yourself your will can go?
If you want to know if you have grit,
Just pick out a joy that you like, and quit.

It’s bully sport and it’s open fight;
It will keep you busy both day and night;
For the toughest kind of a game you’ll find
Is to make your body obey your mind.
And you never will know what is meant by grit
Unless there’s something you’ve tried to quit.

Health Facts: Being Betrayed in a Relationship Can Adversely Affect Your Health

Betrayal in a relationship can have significant effects on the health of the betrayed person, both mentally and physically. Here are two key ways it can impact their health:

  1. Emotional and Mental Health Decline: Betrayal often leads to feelings of intense emotional distress, including sadness, anger, anxiety, and depression. The loss of trust can result in emotional instability, lower self-esteem, and difficulty forming future relationships. These emotions can sometimes manifest as mental health disorders, such as depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
  2. Physical Health Issues: Chronic stress from betrayal can cause a variety of physical symptoms, including headaches, gastrointestinal issues, sleep disturbances, and a weakened immune system. Prolonged stress may also increase the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and other stress-related conditions due to the constant release of stress hormones like cortisol.

Betrayal can deeply impact a person’s well-being, making it important to seek support and find healthy coping mechanisms.
