Admitting the Truth

Spread the love

I don’t drink alcohol, however, I am a big fan of AA and their 12 step program. The first step is critical. It is a self admission that one is powerless over his/her ability to control their drinking. What is your addiction? Is it sugar? Sub sugar for alcohol. Is it drugs? Whatever it is, recognizing our powerlessness over it is a first step. It is also a humbling experience. Don’t fear admitting an addiction and seeking help. It is a sign of incredible strength and insight into one’s self.

  1. That’s a very good point that I think many people don’t consider, just because their addiction is socially acceptable doesn’t make it less of an addiction. Some people are addicted to coffee, some to sugar, some to social praise or success. A human can be addicted to anything, and sometimes it’s hard for us to see when we are addicted to something if it’s not one of the top socially unacceptable vices like drinking, smoking, or drugs. Hmm, for me (as odd as it sounds) it’s routines. I really want everything to happen the same way at the same time every day. I recently went on a trip to Mexico. It was beautiful there, and everyone was so nice! But I spent a lot of my time being miserable because I couldn’t stay on my normal schedule. I was in tears when I couldn’t finish my breakfast while sipping tea, like at home. I started shaking when I realized that I would spend the next day exploring instead of staying in and cleaning the house like I did every Thursday at home. It was so hard for me to break with my regular schedule.

    • Thanks for sharing. I get it. One of my issues is exercise. If I miss going to the gym, I’m sure planet Earth is no longer rotating on its axis. We all have our addictions, being aware of them is a good first step toward gaining control over them (it;s not easy). Have a great day. Ray
