Flash Fiction Prompt:She Wanted a Quiet Night In—Until the Screen Called Her By Name

Spread the love

What would you do if the movie you were watching suddenly started watching you?

Prompt

Erin froze, the wineglass hovering halfway to her lips, as the actor on the screen spoke her name again—slowly, deliberately, as if tasting it.

She didn’t believe in ghosts, talking to dead loved ones, or zombies—she’d rolled her eyes at every one of those late-night shows. But now she was sitting alone in her living room, wrapped in her favorite blanket, watching a harmless rom-com when the actor turned, pointed straight at the camera, and said, “I love you, Erin.” There was no character named Erin in the movie. She checked the glass—half full, not enough to blame on alcohol. The actor leaned closer, eyes darker than before, and said, “Yes… you, Erin. I’ve been waiting.”

The lights flickered.

Her phone vibrated.

A text from an unknown number appeared:

DON’T TURN OFF THE TV.

What would you do next if the movie on your screen suddenly knew your name—turn it off, or listen? What’s the next move in this story?
