Writer’s Prompt: Suspense Flash Fiction: A Cheating Fiancé, A Loaded .38, and a Choice

Spread the love

She expected a quiet afternoon off. Instead, Detective Julie Jamison found her fiancé, her best friend, and a choice that would change three lives forever.

The Final Cadence

Julie Jamison lived for the unpredictable—the sudden break in a cold case, the chaotic rhythm of the city’s precinct. But this afternoon, the silence of her own home was the loudest thing she’d ever heard.

Getting off early was supposed to be a gift. She had pictured surprise takeout and an evening of rare, quiet domesticity. Instead, as she pushed open the bedroom door, she found her fiancé, Will Evans, catching his afternoon aerobic workout in bed. The rhythmic rustle of the sheets synced perfectly with the breathless laughter of Megan, Julie’s forthcoming maid of honor.

Time stretched, thin and brittle. The betrayal didn’t hit her as a sob, but as a freezing wave of clarity. Will’s eyes went wide, the color draining from his face as he froze mid-motion. Megan scrambled backward, pulling the duvet to her chin, her mouth opening in a silent plea.

Julie didn’t scream. She didn’t cry. With a calm that terrified even herself, she reached into her shoulder bag. Her fingers wrapped around the familiar, checkered grip of her off-duty .38 caliber revolver.

She pulled it out, the cold steel catching the dim afternoon light. Will raised his hands, shaking, his voice a cracked whisper: “Julie, please. It’s not what it looks like.”

Julie looked at the man she was supposed to marry, then at the woman who held her deepest secrets. She thumbed the hammer back. A single, sharp click echoed through the room.

What happens next? Does Julie cross a line she can never return from, or does her badge pull her back from the edge? The final choice is yours—how does this betrayal end?
