He thought he knew which twin held his heart, but when the ring came out, the mirror cracked.

Double Trouble
The grandfather clock in the foyer struck eight, its heavy chime matching the rhythmic thumping of Curt’s heart. In his jacket pocket, the velvet box felt like a lead weight. Tonight was the night. He was going to ask Molly to marry him.
The parlor doors opened, and they walked in.
Curt’s breath caught. They wore identical emerald silk dresses. Their dark hair cascaded in identical soft waves over their shoulders. They even walked with the same fluid, synchronized grace. Molly and Mattie. Mattie and Molly. For two years, he had dated them—or rather, he had dated her, whichever one she was at any given moment. They treated it like a high-stakes parlor game, a flawless sisterly conspiracy, refusing to ever give him a hint.
The twin on the left offered a soft, demure smile. The twin on the right gave a playful, mischievous wink.
Curt stepped forward, his hand trembling as he reached into his pocket. He looked into the eyes of the twin on the left. There was a warmth there, a shared history of quiet midnight conversations and promised futures. But then he looked at the twin on the right, seeing the exact same spark.
He knelt on one knee. The velvet box snapped open, revealing a vintage sapphire ring.
“I love you,” Curt said, his voice echoing in the sudden, suffocating silence of the room. “I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?”
Both women gasped simultaneously, their hands flying to their throats in a mirrored motion. The twin on the left took a step forward, her eyes wide. But the twin on the right was already reaching her hand out toward the ring.
Curt froze. He had chosen. But had he chosen Molly?
Over to You: Curt has made his move, but the game isn’t over. Which twin did he just propose to, and does she accept—or does the ultimate switcheroo happen next? Finish the story in the comments below!
