The neon glare of the 7-Eleven sign buzzed overhead, a sharp contrast to the suffocating 100-degree San Antonio heat bleeding through the glass. Detective Willie Santos pressed the freezing paper cup of soda against his forehead, desperately trying to cool down. He hadn’t even taken his first sip when the air pressure in the room shifted.
The door didn’t just open; it slammed.
A figure in a heavy black hoodie—madness in this weather—lunged across the aisle. In one fluid, terrifying motion, the intruder grabbed a woman looking at the coffee bar, twisting her arm behind her back. The metallic gleam of a snub-nosed revolver pressed hard into her temple.
“Empty the drawer! Now! Or she leaks!” the gunman screamed, his voice raw and erratic. The cashier froze, hands trembling over the register keys.
Willie’s adrenaline vaporized the heat exhaustion instantly. His hand dropped to his hip, his fingers wrapping around the familiar grip of his service weapon. He unholstered the pistol, keeping it low, stepping completely into the shadow of the chip aisle.
His heart hammered a frantic rhythm against his ribs. From this angle, thirty feet away, he had a clear sightline to the side of the gunman’s head. He breathed out, bringing the weapon up, aligning the front sight. He could end this right now. One clean press of the trigger.
But the woman was terrified, sobbing, her head jerking with every gasp. The gunman was hyperactive, pacing in micro-movements.
If I shoot and miss, she dies instantly, Willie thought. If I call out, he might panic and squeeze.
The cashier slammed the cash drawer open. Time was up. Willie tightened his finger on the trigger.
