The photograph was a fading relic of a different life. Twenty-eight years ago, two girls sat on a sunlit bench, laughing. Tracy had vanilla; Lara had chocolate, her chin smeared with it.

Now, Lara’s favorite flavor was crack cocaine, and her laugh had been replaced by the hollow rattle of a desperate addict.

Private Investigator Tracy Harmon stared at the photo on her cluttered desk, the contrast between memory and reality burning a hole in her chest. She had spent weeks in the shadows, tracking the supply chain, mapping the distribution, and identifying the dealers turning her sister’s neighborhood into a graveyard. She knew their faces.
