The Debt at the Door

Stan Pollen looked in the mirror, adjusted his out-of-style thin tie, pulling the Windsor knot tight. He smiled, checking his teeth for remnants of a lunch salad. He spotted a stray green piece and used the nail of his forefinger to get it out. Stan patted the left side of his coat, making sure his .38 special was in reach. He grabbed his fedora off the top of the coat rack, set it on his head tilting it down and a bit to the left, and stepped out into the hall.

An hour later he was in Sam Spitz’s outer office. Sam’s secretary, Doris, was working on her nails while her gums were doing aerobics with a piece of gum.

“Yah,” Doris said without looking up.

“Sam in?”

“Who shall I say is calling?”

“Tell him a friend from the past.”

“Sam don’t have no friends.”

Stan put his two hands flat on the desk and bent down to go eye-to-eye with Doris. “Look kid, don’t get cute with me. Cute went out ten years ago with the gum chewing. Don’t bother Sam, I’m going in.”

Stan opened the door, his gun in his right hand.

Sam Spitz looked up, setting down a heavy silver fountain pen. “I figured you’d show up one day, Stan.”

“Then you know why I’m here,” Stan said, the barrel pointing straight at Sam’s chest. “Ten years in a six-by-eight cell gives a man time to remember who left the back door unlocked.”

Sam didn’t flinch. Instead, he slowly reached toward the top drawer of his mahogany desk. “You always were quick to jump to conclusions, Stan. Before you pull that trigger, you might want to look at what’s in this folder.”

Stan’s grip tightened on the .38, his knuckles turning white.
