The Storefront Mirror
Elise Jenkovich interrupted her walk to look at a pair of shoes in a storefront window, but she wasn’t looking at the heels. She was scanning the glass, watching the street behind her the way a hawk sits on a high branch, searching for movement below. Elise wasn’t hunting. She was looking for her tail.
She felt him before she saw him—that sharp, electric pulse at the base of her neck, the same instinct that made her German shepherd’s hair stand on end whenever a stranger stepped into the hallway.
Then she spotted him in the reflection. Oh, he’s good, she thought. He was leaning against a newsstand, eyes fixed on the glass, using the exact same trick.
Elise slid her right hand into her structured leather handbag. Her fingers wrapped around the checkered grip of her .38 caliber revolver. The cold steel gave her a sudden, crisp wave of focus. Part of her wanted to turn around, smile, and wave. Instead, she turned left on Elm Street, stepping quickly into the shadow of the abandoned textile warehouse—a dead-end alley where she knew every doorway, every loose brick, and every hidden shadow. Here, the ground was hers.
Footsteps echoed behind her, deliberate and unhurried.
Elise stopped at the reinforced steel door halfway down the alley, her key already primed in her left hand. She turned slowly, her hand still hidden deep inside her bag, index finger light on the trigger.
The man stopped ten feet away. He didn’t reach for a weapon. Instead, he smiled, holding up a small black leather badge holder, resting his thumbs flat against his belt line.
“Elise,” he said quietly. “Your father said you’d be hard to track.”
