Mark’s fingers hovered over the mechanical keyboard, his pulse racing to the rhythm of clicking keys. His plan was juvenile, maybe even borderline criminal, but desperation made a convincing argument. Whenever Stacy passed his cubicle, smelling of vanilla and clean laundry, his voice evaporated. A tiny, harmless script to freeze her desktop was all it took. He’d swoop in, play the office IT savior, and casually parlay a reboot into a coffee date.
The bypass was effortless. Within minutes, Mark breached her system’s local directories. He prepared to drop the benign payload into her startup folder, but curiosity got the better of him. He clicked into a hidden directory labeled simply: Archive_04.
The screen flickered, revealing dozens of subfolders. Mark opened the first one.
His breath caught. Staring back at him were hundreds of high-resolution photos of himself.
There were shots of him grabbing morning espresso at the corner deli, images taken from across the street outside his apartment window, and candid close-ups of him working late at his desk. Every file was meticulously cataloged by date, time, and clothing.
Beneath the photo gallery lay a text document titled Phase_Two_Acquisition.txt. Mark’s trembling hand guided the mouse to open it.
The file read: Target is predictable. Routine confirmed. Deploying simulated firewall breach tomorrow morning to force direct contact.
A soft chime echoed through his headphones as an alert popped up on his screen: Remote connection established. Webcam 1 activated.
Behind him, the heavy breakroom door clicked shut. Light footsteps tapped against the carpet, stopping right at the edge of his cubicle.
