Writer’s Prompt: The Widow’s Vow: A Gripping Tale of Cartel Revenge and Moral Reckoning

Spread the love

A single red rose on a fresh grave marks the beginning of a deadly reckoning—how far will a grieving widow go?

The Vow of Maria Santiago

Maria Santiago dropped to her knees on the freshly filled in grave. She placed a single red rose on the earth, bowed closely to the ground, and whispered, “Jose, the narcos took you from me. But they do not know the wrath of a woman who has lost the love of her life…”

A month later, the soft cemetery soil was replaced by the polished marble floors of the Casa de Flores—the fortified estate of cartel boss El Martillo. Maria didn’t sneak in; she had applied as a laundress. Her references were impeccable and forged by men who feared her quiet intensity more than they feared the cartel.

She had studied his routine, a repetitive dance of arrogance. Every night at 10:00 PM, El Martillo sat on his west-facing balcony, overlooking the city he claimed, and drank a tumbler of rare mescal. He was always alone then, nursing his ego.

It was 9:58 PM. Maria stood inside the dark laundry room, her fingers tracing the outline of the small glass vial she had sewn into the hem of her apron. The substance within was tasteless and undetectable, sourced from a rare jungle plant. It wouldn’t just kill; it would cause pain that mirrored her own soul.

She slipped onto the patio, moving like a ghost. El Martillo sat with his back to her, watching the distant lights. The tumbler was on the small table next to him. She drew close enough to hear his breath, the rattle of ice.

Her hand trembled as she unstitched the vial. A slight sound from the main house—a guard, or maybe just the wind—made her freeze. If she was caught now, her death would be slow and meaningless.

Maria paused. Revenge was here, poured into a single, deadly choice. But as she looked at the glass, she saw not El Martillo’s death, but Jose’s face.

She raised the vial above the tumbler, tilting her wrist. The first droplet hesitated at the glass lip.

Did she empty the vial, and was she ever caught? You finish the story.
