Tony didn’t wait for next week.
A man like Will Jenkins—six-foot-four of bloated pride and cruel laughter—didn’t respond to paperwork. He responded to leverage.
By dusk on Thursday, Tony was parked across from Jenkins’s auto shop. Rain slicked the windshield, blurring the neon sign buzzing overhead. Tony rubbed his knuckles, the skin scarred from three decades on high-steel girders. He wasn’t a violent man by trade, but he knew the physics of leverage: apply pressure to the right fulcrum, and even the biggest structure folds.
Marcia didn’t deserve to spend her nights locking windows and jumping at every siren. Little Leo didn’t deserve an empty pantry because his father thought cruelty made him a king.
At seven, the shop lights went dark. Jenkins emerged, locking the bay door. He wore a heavy canvas jacket, shoulders broad, whistling an off-key tune into the damp air.
Tony killed his headlights, clicked open the truck door, and stepped out onto the wet asphalt. His steel-toed boots made no sound against the rumbling thunder.
“Jenkins,” Tony called, his voice low, cutting through the drizzle like a dull blade.
The big man spun around, keys dangling from his fist, his brow furrowing in irritation. “Who’s asking?”
Tony closed the distance until he stood just three feet away, close enough to smell stale beer and motor oil. He didn’t pull a weapon; he just raised his thick, scarred hands and rested them on the front of his own coat.
“A friend of Sam’s,” Tony whispered. “We’re going to talk about child support. And by the end of it, you’re going to sign whatever Marcia’s lawyer sends you.”
Jenkins smirked, his hand slipping toward the deep pocket of his work coat.
