She spent six months faking love to catch a traitor, but the man in her crosshairs isn’t holding the cards she thought he was.

Writer’s Prompt
The taste of Josh’s morning coffee still lingered on Nora Sampson’s lips as she watched him reach his sedan three floors below. Ten seconds later, she was taking the concrete stairwell three steps at a time. By the time he merged onto the expressway, she was two car lengths behind in a gray rental sedan, her pulse sitting at a steady fifty-five.
Nora didn’t allow her heart to feel. For six months, she had performed domestic bliss with the precision of an Oscar contender. She knew he loved her—she had mapped every soft edge of his devotion—but affection was just tradecraft leverage. Josh Tolly wasn’t a mid-level defense logistics analyst; he was a leaking pipe.
She tracked his taillights down toward the rusted industrial docks off Pier 42. Fog rolled off the brackish water, swallowing the morning light. Josh killed his engine near a derelict salt shed. Nora slipped from her car, moving silently behind a stack of weathered cargo pallets, her long-lens camera already whirring in burst mode.
A black town car arrived. Two men in dark wool overcoats stepped out. Josh approached, his gait stiff, and handed over a thick, wax-sealed Manila envelope. The taller man inspected the seal, nodded once, and reached into his coat.
Nora racked the slide of her Glock 19. Her operational mandate was extraction and trial, but seeing the exchange in cold gray daylight severed her patience. A traitor was a traitor.
She leveled the barrel, aligning the front sight post with the center of Josh’s shoulder blades.
Then Josh turned slightly. Beneath his windbreaker, pinned to his lapel, flashed a covert audio wire. And the man in the overcoat didn’t draw cash—he withdrew a suppressed pistol.
Nora’s finger tightened on the trigger.
Two Opposing Directions to Finish the Story:
- Direction A (The Agency Cross): Josh isn’t a traitor, but an FBI deep-cover operative running a sting on a foreign intelligence ring. Nora fires to “neutralize” the buyer and save Josh, blowing the FBI’s five-year operation and outing her own agency cover in an explosive jurisdictional firefight.
- Direction B (The Double Blind): Josh spotted Nora’s surveillance days ago and wired himself as bait to draw her out. The men on the pier aren’t buyers—they are private mercenaries hired to liquidate her, and the envelope contains Nora’s true classified CIA profile.
How does the hammer fall? Finish Nora’s choice and decide who survives Pier 42.
