Writer’s Prompt: The Altar’s Shadow: A Flash Fiction Story of Obsession and Revenge

Spread the love

Three years after being abandoned at the altar, Jill’s calculated blueprint for revenge knocks directly on her front door.

Writer’s Prompt

The calico purred, vibrating against Jill’s ribs as she drew her palm down the coarse fur along its spine. Stroke. Release. Stroke.

“It’s not over, Ralph,” she murmured into the dimness. “It’s not over.”

The spare bedroom door stood open behind her, bathed in the sickly yellow glow of a single brass floor lamp. Inside, the walls had vanished beneath three years of Ralph’s life—glossy 8x10s pinned with thumbtacks, surveillance photos outside his downtown loft, printouts of social media posts featuring her replacement, Elena. Elena laughing over sangria. Elena tucking a stray curl behind Ralph’s ear.

The image in Jill’s head had ceased to be an intrusive flicker; it had become an architect’s blueprint. A staged break-in. Elena slumped against the kitchen island, a dropped ceramic mug pooling cold coffee beside a blunt trauma wound. Ralph twenty feet away in the hallway, an untraceable snub-nosed revolver resting in his lifeless fingers. A tidy, tragic domestic dispute gone fatal. No loose threads.

Her phone buzzed against the coffee table. The screen illuminated a text from a burner number she had paid two hundred dollars to monitor outside Ralph’s apartment: Target heading to your street. Alone.

Jill froze. The cat leapt softly from her lap, slinking under the sofa.

A heavy knock rattled her front door—three measured, deliberate thuds that belonged to only one pair of knuckles.

In the entryway console drawer rested a key, an untraceable receipt, and a loaded snub-nosed revolver. In her pocket, her thumb hovered over the delete key for every digital trace of the spare room.

Jill stepped into the hallway. The brass knob began to slowly turn from the outside.

Two Opposing Directions for the Story’s Conclusion:

  • Direction 1 (The Descent into Action): Jill opens the door ready to enact her staged tragedy right there on her own threshold, trapping Ralph in the very scenario she built for him—only to discover he came to beg for forgiveness, forcing her to decide whether to pull the trigger or accept a hollow reconciliation.
  • Direction 2 (The Twist of Exposure): Ralph isn’t there to apologize; he has uncovered her surveillance, and the figure stepping through the door isn’t a contrite ex-lover, but a private investigator or plainclothes detective holding printouts of her own search history, shifting her from predator to prey.

How would you resolve Jill’s reckoning? Step into the writer’s chair and craft the final paragraphs.
